Flea/Tick Question for New Puppy

I have recently acquired a wonderful new puppy. She is now three months old and I am very concerned about giving her the flea meds that the vet has recommended. I have read mostly negative things about any flea control meds.

What do you use to keep your puppy from getting fleas and ticks that you feel is safe? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
