Re: First human head transplant

The spinal cord is not one solid entity, but a series of many filaments and nerves, all which would have to be connected precisely filament to filament. Sorry, I just don't believe that is possible. Otherwise, quadriplegics would be up and running without the help of bionics soon after their injury. Having known someone who severed at C-3 and was paralyzed from the neck down from 15 years of age till he had his respirator disconnected at 50 when he died, there certainly was never any talk of reconnecting his spinal cord.

All the 'miracles' we have now, had to start somewhere. As long as all parties are consenting, I say it may just be of some value for science and the process of making things like this a reality some day.

Interesting.  Someone was bound to do it sometime.   From a purely medical view the proceedure of re- attatching all those nerves from the spine / brain stem to the other spine and have any maintainable nerve communication would be an achievement. Everyone needs to be realistic and go into this with all the cards on the table.   Prayers of peace to both people involved.

Agreed . . .  reattachment of the spine / brain stem and all the corresponding nerves etc., would be overwhelming  Smiley Indifferent

Sounds like April Fool's stuff to me.  They haven't even been able to repair severed spinal cords yet; so, the chance of a  head transplant is nil.  But I'm sure someone, somewhere is willing to take his money.

There is no first human head transplant.  There is an MD in Italy who dreams of doing one some day.

@alliswell

Doesn't it seem like if they could re-attach all of those filaments in the spinal cord, they would be doing this for spinal injuries already?

This whole concept just creeps me out when the discussion of body parts entered.
