Re: First US vaccines to be delivered to the US on December 15

It's wonderful news, but I do have some fear as a result of fast-tracking the disbursement of the vaccine. What are the long term consequences, for example. We don't really know. One screw-up with manufacture of the polio vaccine led to children getting the virus. I am by no means anti-vaccine. I get all my shots. However, I am a bit uneasy about being the first on line for this vaccine. I am over 65, with asthma. I suppose I could be an early recipient of the vaccine. I will get it but I must decide when.

@Vivian @Front line health care workers are supposed to be first in line but there are some of them speaking online saying they don't feel ready. There are quite a few hesitant doctors. Not everyone wants to go first. We will have to see how it goes.

Re: First US vaccines to be delivered to the US on December 15

A panel's recommendations that nursing home residents and employees, as well as health-care workers, be offered the vaccine first will be approved or not today by the CDC. States would be able to accept those guidelines or not, said a newspaper.

The newspaper also said:

"The only member of the committee to vote against the recommendation was Dr. Helen Talbot, an infectious-disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, who expressed discomfort with putting long-term-care residents in the first priority group because the vaccines’ safety had not been studied in that particular population. 'We enter this realm of ‘we hope it works and we hope it’s safe,’ and that concerns me on many levels,' she said before the vote."

Unbelievable.

Every high ranking medical person has said they will be the first in line to get it.

One medical expert, Dean of Baylor tropical infectious disease, said this morning that they have been working on  a coronavirus vaccine for at least the last 10 to 12 years, when asked how they could do this so fast.  China distributed the genome around the world to researchers so they could fine-tune it to COVID-19.  He said that made all the difference in the world and that's why these have come out so fast.

I'm so happy about this! This is why you can't assume that seemingly unsolvable problems will remain unsolved forever. Human beings' saving grace is our inventiveness. We are constantly looking for problems (which is sometimes a pain) and then overcoming them (which is almost a miracle).

What I find curious is they just approved it yesterday, so to speak, and they are giving shots tomorrow?  How long does it take to actually manufacture this vaccine .....  by the thousands?

@Bhvbum   There is a bit more Dr. Hotez said but this is a fair enough summary.

Thank you for posting this, I don't think some people realize how significant this sharing was.
