😢🙏 No words.

After all the disaster photos yesterday I can't help but wonder about the rebuilding . I'm sure it will begin soon and will proceed more quickly than we can imagine. Hope Lahaina is rebuilt with character and fire resistant materials. Because of the nature of the housing ( A lot really close to the town looks very old and with homemade additions etc) I'm wondering if all are fully insured, how much to rebuild and even if they can afford to rebuild ( and the new cost to insure). A very sad situation!

It's pretty jarring to imagine wildfires in Hawaii. I think of it as a lush place, like a rain forest.

Not been to Hawaii, but have been through two wildfires. tWC said is was more of a firestorm similiar to what happened in Paradise, CA. Prayers for the people there.

I heard from my co-worker! Cell service is still splotchy so I couldn't hear everything she was saying, but she is OK! Praise God! She said it happend so fast. I didn't get to talk long because of the phone service, but knowing she is okay is such a relief. She may end up coming to O‘ahu. I am so relieved, yet still heartbroken.

Does anyone know how the fires started? It is a tragedy. I like the large island and one of the few that wasn't all that jazzed about Maui. However, I wouldn't want anyone to suffer loss from fires.

@ValuSkr We do have rainforests, but this does not include entire islands. The Westside of islands, where Lahaina is located, is usually dry & hot. There is a lot of dry scrub brush, which under drought conditions, can easily erupt into wildfires. Areas near sea level are also more hot & dry. Hawai'i has islands, so that results in a lot of land at sea level.
It's Summer weather most of the year, but luckily we have trade winds! Unfortunately, we also experience a lot of Hurricanes. Although Hurricane Dora was really far South of us, it pulled all the really strong winds from a High Pressure system North of the islands.
This was a freak weather occurrence that has happened before, but not with this devastating and severe result.

Some won't be able to rebuild and they will have to leave the island and start their lives somewhere else. I can't imagine that.

Climate refugees. It can happen to any of us. It is predicted to happen to millions over the next decade.

I went to Hawaii years ago both the big Island and Maui. Absolutely beautiful.
I had heard about this on the news yesterday, but did not watch footage until this morning while watching the news. Absolutely horrible, blessings to all who live there. Glad to hear @SurferWife is doing okay, and the other poster who I am not familiar with is safe as well.
