I do feed the birds but I am having a problem with the little finches they get stuck in the feeder. They crawl under the plastic and so far I have rescued everyone. Anyone else have this problem.

I feed the birds daily. Yikes about the bears. There have been Coyote citings around here occasionally. Lots of turkeys. No deer for awhile.

Its been 5 below zero here in PA for days with wind chills that are worse. ( I don't work anymore so I haven't been out in days and Ive had it with Winter but that's another story).
Anyway, my husband goes out every morning (415 AM) and trudges through snow on the grass in the yard to feed the birds. Always has always will (year round) And a lot of times he goes out after work to feed them too! . .
The good news is its warming up soon by next Tuesday 50 some degrees!
PS Love the birds outside. We have many cardinals, downy woodpeckers, snow birds, etc this Winter.

I feed the birds year-round; I love watching them...they have started ignoring the squirrels..and the squirrels seem a bit intimidated by them so they keep away from the feeders if there are several birds here at the same time. Water is just as important as the food.
If you are concerned about the seed attracting rodents, just don’t use any fruit or fruit mixes as bird food...it will attract rodents and other unwanted pests...this is what the exterminator told me as he removed a rat from our new a/c unit.....he said standard food like sunflower seeds or miller won’t attract them. I have had no more issues since being selective with seed now,
i buy a big bucket of Wagners 4 season seed at Home Depot for less than $14....the birds love it.

I bought two bird feeders this week , one has sunflower seeds in it ,the other salflower seeds, why would they not be eating from them?

I do it all the time. Squirrels show up also. At night deer. We buy a big supply for the Winter season and watch the variety that come to eat.

We feed year round, just love watching the birds. Have 4 hanging tube, squirrel proof? Feeders. Also three suet feeders, they really like the suet in cold weather.

Are the seeds in the shells? I know that the types of birdies who like to eat the seeds, especially the little bitty ones, tend to not go for anything still in the shell.
The only whole ones I do are the peanuts for the scrub jays.
