Feds recover millions in ransom for Colonial Pipeline

Per Washington Post, etc:  Feds recovered 4.4 million ransom in crypto currency.  Hopefully this slows down this type of terrorism.

@patbz   There's probably a dark, intriguing undercover movie in this story.  I'd like to know how they did it. I credit James Bond. That's great.  We need to end this nonsense.

Of course they did. That is awesome.

Pretty funny to consider all the financial transactions criminals have been making using crypto currency, imagining they couldn't be traced. Makes me smile. Now to roll them all up!

I guess I'm a dummy, but I don't understand crypto currency. I still use the green foldable stuff for almost everything.

Colonial Pipeline CEO payed $4.4 million in ransom.

Justice Department said it seized $2.3 million in cryptocurrency of the ransom paid to hackers who shut down Colonial Pipeline’s computer systems.

Anyone else but me think this will embolden them with a more serious hack until they do get paid?

@Snowpuppy, it's a toss up either way. Getting paid emboldens them.

There is some talk of mandating companies not to pay.

My understanding of ransomware is the target is pretty much at the mercy of the attacker. Seems no one has been able to break a ransomware hack.

So say they hack the grid? We're not gonna pay up?

That's the million-dollar question, isn't it? @Snowpuppy
