Re: February's Bird Nest - Valentine's Edition

My day usually starts around 4 a.m. That schedule goes back many many years as I often use to start then or at 3. Hard to change those habits but have never been a nighttime person anyway. So by 7 o'clock or somewhere around there I am ready for bed and sleep. Course in a couple hours am awake again and so it goes. LOL. I do love the peace and quiet early mornings - always have. I stay up a bit longer when the days get longer however.

Feathered friends have sure been eating like crazy past couple weeks - but then they always manage to feed themselves. Still have not seen those pretty light brown birds again - with the black tails - they were so very pretty. Have spent a lot of time looking for a picture but cannot find anything similar. We no longer see Orioles or Finch hanging out. There may be some Finch as I am never sure of them but none of the beautiful colored ones such as yellow, orange or red. Course we don't have coyotes hanging out like we use to either and for that I am grateful. LOL. They still occasionally make themselves known but not like in years past - too much building on the beautiful hills around us - also they have messed up a lot of the natural Washes which were abundant. Some are cemented in and others have remained but not like they were.

Today will get the birdbath cleaned out although not too many birds are using it right now. Still a lot of moisture hanging around since we had rain a few weeks back - lots of rain but not enough. Must also get the cat condo clean as if the weather continues to stay warmer will put the tenant kitties out there for a few hours each day. Will also try and get some weeds pulled but then there are still all those limbs out there needing chopping so they will fit into my yard waste containers. One thing for sure I am not lacking for something to do. LOL.

Have a great day everyone.

Hello all - Freddie, good for you for establishing some rules about the wash. When they have nothing clean to wear they will get the message.

The bird of the day is the European Roller

Yeah!!!! Mousie, Enjoy the raindrops. {#emotions_dlg.thumbup} Hope you get what you all need moisture wise. It rained here yesterday and it was needed.

Below are 2 photos of the Great Horned Owl that I am watching on the Savannah nest cam. She's beautiful and the two eggs have hatched. The youngest hatched this morning, 2/6/15. The older one is 3 days old now. They look like little balls of fuzzy down. She seldom leaves the nest and this morning the papa flew to the nest with food for her. Sadly, lots of their prey is marsh birds, from the nearby salt marshes near Savannah.

SavannahOwls The people at Cornell Orinthology are controlling the camera and sometimes bring the lens in really close to her face. I guess they are studying everything about her, looks, behavior, habits etc. I have a beautiful photo of her that I took with my Smart phone, that would fill this screen. It's of her face and another is a close up full body photo. She is a gorgeous owl and a very dedicated mom now. It was so cool to see the Papa Owl show up this morning and he was hooting the males call. She was happily chirping while he was there. One part of the video has him looking right into the camera. Love watching this Owl family, so far. I hope to get photos of the owlets soon.

Re: February's Bird Nest - Valentine's Edition

Happy Weekend Birding Friends - it's 35 degrees outside and I was able to run errands without a hat on my head - woo hoo {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}. I've got the Q on today and periodically peeked at the offerings. Nothing is moving me to buy, but it's better than computers or beds.

The bird for the weekend is the Swallow Tailed Gull

Congrats on the rain Mousie. I hope some of it moves Freddie's way.

Her areas has had a lot of rain lately, more than we are supposed to get, and I don't know why we are out of the rain loop, so to speak, because further north also has gotten much more rain than this area.

Mousie - I need to look at a map of California and better figure out general areas of the state that apply to you and Winifred. I don't know why I am so dumb about geography.
