Farewell New York MTA MetroCard!

[ Edited ]

If you live or work in the NYC Metro Area, or have visited in the past 30 years, you're familiar with this card.

As of today, they are no longer for sale and money can't be loaded.  However, if you have one with money on it, most stations will take it until sometime in the spring when it will die completely.

It's all Tap and Go after that.

Having done it all ways, tapping and going is so much faster than the swipe, which often had snags.

I started swiping in 1997, have tapped for about 5 years, but I still have a small box of keepsake tokens!

@THEY CallMe Mr Wilkes Did you go to any of the memorial services for the card?  I've seen a couple of them on social media Smiley Very Happy

My MetroCard has a small balance.  Every time my son comes to visit I forget to give it to him.  I guess my balance will just have to expire right along with the card.  I also have some of the "Y" tokens.  Remnants from home.

Fare is going to $3 very soon if it hasn't already.

Fare increase effective January 4th.

I saw the "funerals" on the news and found it funny and silly.

I say Good Riddance, the same as with paper checks.  I find the analogies.  If you needed to ride the subways and buses,  you had no choice but to adapt to the new payment mechanisms.

I don't think I've been on a NY subway since there were tokens!  Yikes, is that over 30 years?

Does tap and go mean you can use any credit card?  I guess if you want a senior fare you need to use a different card.

@THEY CallMe Mr Wilkes im ignorant but curious. If that card is not being used anymore, what are you using to  "tap and go"?

Why wouldn't they just reissue and sell new Metro Cards with a tap feature on it like our debit and credit cards have i wonder?

You can "tap and go" one of three ways:

--Tap with your phone that has a payment app set up, like Samsung Pay or Apple

--Purchase a OMNY card from vending machines which you load

--Use any credit card whatsoever which has the "radio waves"

(I think for senior citizens fare you would purchase a special OMNY card.)

I was in Boston last week, and we used the subway with my companion's phone.  But it looked like the machines where you buy the cards, were still there, for now

Re: Farewell New York MTA MetroCard!

I just paid $3 to Tap and Go!

At least the charge system works, although the train I was on was taken out of service!
