Re: Family or Pets?

It's unknown what the mother has done or failed to do.

We have suggested the child get help because it's not possible to avoid dogs unless he avoids leaving his home.  I believe that will become fact rather than supposition in future.

I don't think that a guest coming to your home for a holiday or a get-together should automatically bring their pet. That should be something they talk to you about before hand and then give you the chance to say yes or no. Then you have the opportunity to explain that it would be better if they did not bring the dog.

@speedy girl  -  The OP is the one going to someone else's home that has a dog.  She is asking for the owner of the home to confine the dog while she is there with her son.

I think if I invite anyone into my home, it is incumbent upon me to provide a safe and comfortable setting for my guest.

And acknowledge that not everyone copes well around animals, acknowledge that some may have a fear or an allergy.

Curious what some do when they have a repair person or maintenance work done in their home. Have you never had them state that pets need to be secured out of the way? What about when furniture or major appliances are delivered? Common sense dictates for the sake of your pets and all involved not to have them underfoot.

@goldensrbest  but at the same time that Post has nothing to do with the question @timeless  asked.

It most certainly does.  If she was fine with not hosting and seeing relatives in post of Oct 31st of this year and then further stated that " Smiley HappyWe visit relatives during the rest of the year and go out to eat.  Problem solved

People reconsider and change their minds sometimes.

When we have guest or repair work done in our home we always place the dog in his crate or in an area away from them. Any dog can bite or scratch and it would be irresponsible to give the dog access to strangers in the house.

@Etoile308 None of the things you mentioned have ever taken more than an hour or 2!!  It's not the same as having to keep pets out of sight for a whole day.  Although my plumber and guy who fixes my appliances do not care if my dog is present and always give her treats and hugs.  No one should have to accomodate someone afraid of dogs for a whole day!!

Where was it discussed that it would be for a whole day?

@JeanLouiseFinch

Because it was a holiday party, it was assumed, just like it's been assumed the host has a place to confine her dog and the dog wouldn't bark, whine, and scratch to get out. Someone terrified would not do well hearing the dog barking nor would the other guests enjoy it.
