I would like to do an ancestry test...there is a rumor that we have Native American blood. I'd like to know if its true and what tribe we are affiliated with.

For most--this is just a rumor. It was the rumor in my family as well and there is not one drop of NA blood. It's a good way to put that rumor to rest one way or another though.

I don't know of any shocking info, but several in my family have used one of the ancestry services Just realize with the heavy reliance on DNA now from law enforcement, your DNA will be " out there" if you use one of the ancestry companies that requires a sample of DNA to receive a report. I understand some people don't want anyone to have access to their DNA. Did find out my father had three children I never knew about, and I have to wonder if my mother, his first wife, ever knew about any of them since they would all be younger than me and my siblings.

My friend's mom and dad both had 1 child before they met and married. I assume both were teenagers when pregnant. Her mom died before the info came to light. Her dad is still alive. I don't think he has any relationship with daughter, who would be 60ish.

It's a double edged sword. If the child was given up for adoption for a better life (and pregnancy not terminated) my thought is live and let live. Opening up the can of worms may not be a good thing.

My colllege friend was adopted. She found her birth parents and she pushed really hard to be in their lives. It didn't end well. Like someone else said - it wasn't a Hallmark Movie

No, I've never done any searches. Reading the responses, I will say that some good novels could be written using what was found by some posters.

I haven't done an Ancestry DNA test although I have thought about it. If it were me and the child of your aunt was open to communication with me I would try to answer any questions about your aunt, her mother. You say you feel bad for your aunt, but I don't think this is a shameful secret, the child shouldn't carry any "sin", think of it as your aunt gave her child a better life than she could have given.

@Jordan2 , No one said it was shameful, it was just a surprise to some family members. This birth occurred in 1950, and sadly the world was very different. My aunt never told the family, and I just felt a little bad that the secret she kept for all of those years was exposed. However , I guess it doesn't really matter at this point. The man's daughter is interested in pursuing the connection, so I guess we'll see.
