Everyone has their own comfort level. Use Facebook, don't use it. We can all do whatever we'd like. It's a beautiful thing.
But I always get a kick out of the people who trash Facebook and turn their noses down on it who have never even been on it. It's not the evil enemy everyone. It's a social platform. It's like me saying I hate hummus, when I've never even tried it.
Again, my comfort level is that I'm going to continue using Facebook. It brings me far more joy than discomfort. I worry about tons of things going on in our lives right now, but Facebook doesn't even hit my radar.
I'm with you, @gidgetgh, 100%.
Yes, it's clear from some posts (not just on this thread, but on many threads going back quite awhile) that lots of people are completely uninformed about FB, and yet choose to trash it.
Interestingly, I went into my settings yesterday to make the recommended changes, and nothing needed to be changed. I'm very on top of that kind of thing, and it's not really hard. Nothing on the internet is completely secure, but anyone who uses the internet at all should do the most they can to protect themselves. Not just on Facebook. Here, there, and everywhere! FB is not the big, bad wolf of the internet. Not by a long shot.
I'm completely comfortable using FB. I feel just fine about it, and - like you - it brings me much joy. It has kept my family and friends much, much closer in a way that would not otherwise be possible because we are scattered literally all over the world. It adds to my life in other ways too, and yet it is not my entire life. I'm happy to have it and would not want to be without it. Everyone else is free to do whatever they want.
I have the toughest security settings that Facebook allows PLUS my own security software with added security and privacy.....Yet I have been seeing more and more "suggested ads" in my timeline, which I am reporting as spam..... I dont trust little Mark Zuckerberg.
I have zero spam in my email account and no suggested ads from Google when I surf the internet, or with Forums I frequent, or Twitter even because of good security software.....It seems its FACEBOOK that I have this problem with, and as I said Im seldom on it......So for me Facebook IS a problem....So littlle Mark can take some of his 3.8 Bill and put real security measures in place and stop mining our information....I think he's made enough money from Facebook already......
Yes its nice to be able to communicate with relatives and friends that live out of state, or even world-wide. But mostly I find it to be a self centered "look at me and my perfcect life", - out of all the social platforms, its a bit of a "brag book"........and thats why it gets dissed.......

Somehow the conversation started about privacy. Let's face facts, we can all be tracked, so being indignant about that is a waste of energy.
What has been emerging above and beyond the mining of data, is the manipulation after the fact. Taking quizzes, etc. on FB provides the data miners with more information than can usually be gleaned by just posting pics of the family. In turn, users are bombarded with advertising, political ads, etc., (true or false) that they think will appeal to the users. This is where the real trouble comes in. Data mining vs. manipulation.

A friend of mine was wondering how she kept getting comments from creepy men who were definitely not friends nor friends of friends....I told to stop taking those quizzes and read the small print on privacy on websites you frequent.....

Your experience is not at all the same as mine. I have been on FB for years, and have had no problems ever. Obviously, we all differ, and that's fine.
But if you view FB as a "brag book", that's because the people you chose as FB friends are bragging. FB is not responsible for what your friends post. I don't see it as a brag book at all. My friends and family don't brag. None of them post updates all day long about what they had for lunch, or share countless photos of themselves or their awards or whatever. I know that people do that, but those people are someone else's friends, not mine. It's up to us to choose whose posts we want to see. FB doesn't choose your friends. That's up to you.
(And there's plenty of bragging on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc. I don't think FB has the potential to be any worse than any of the other social media platforms. A self-centered person who is motivated to brag will do it everywhere.)

I was in a restaurant at lunch yesterday and two women at the next table were having a rather spirited conversation about how DARE they use peoples' information .... blah blah blah .....
At one point I politely interrupted them and asked how much they paid each month for their FB membership. Simple questtion, right? They both said nothing and I asked them why do they think it's free ... and how do they think FB makes their money? You should have seen their expressions .... when the light bulbs above their heads went on .... lol.
@Tinkrbl44 Hehhhhhh! Lol! I would have paid good money to have seen that.😂

I maybe the only one in this world, but I don't think being on Facebook is something I need nor want in my lifetime. I often talk with and email family and friends...see their pictures etc. It just doesn't interest me... but for those that do use it...enjoy!

You're not the only one in this world. Plenty of posters here agree with you!
It's all okay. We don't all have to like or use the same things. Everyone is different, with different lives, different personalities, situations, life experience, etc. Fortunately, we get to decide for ourselves what works for us and what doesn't.
I like Facebook a lot. But that doesn't mean anyone else has to. I've posted many times about how much I like it, but I would never try to convince someone to sign up or stick witih it if they weren't interested. It's not for everyone. And that's fine. :-)

With all that is going on with Facebook, I am very glad I never fell for joining. I find it sad how addicted people are to this format. You can't even have a conversation with some people because they are too busy checking their Facebook site.

Regardless of where you are posting, you have to be careful.
I know the names of several QBB posters because of personal information they posted here and then on a public FB page. Or they've given enough information to put two and two together.
