you can absolutely talk about anything personal you like to talk about. just remember, it isnt at all as "private" as you think it is. you have to use YOUR comfort level as to what you discuss and reveal......and just how much of a situation or life experience you want to talk about.

as said before by some, pretty much EVERYTHING going on in our lives is now mined, whether you feel it is "safe" or not.

Yes.

It's amazing to me that so many posters are always up on their high horses (and this is not directed at LilacTree) about FB while at the same time they post freely here and clearly use the internet.  Once you're on the internet, your info is out there.  Just because this is the forum for a shopping channel and may feel kind of "homey" to some doesn't mean it's not still the cold, hard internet.

And it shocks me how specific some posters get when writing personal details here.  It's so unnecessary, and yet they do it.  It would be easy to figure out exactly where some posters live, real names, family members, etc, with all the information that some of them provide.  This is the internet, folks!  Anyone who spends time on it needs to educate themselves.  Avoiding FB or Twitter or any social media doesn't solve the problem.  Being smart about what you do, no matter where on the internet you do it, is always the best way to go.

(Susan is not my real name, btw.  And I've often changed small details about myself - whether my kids are male or female, things like that - because I see no need to give more information than is necessary.  Yes, even here.)

OK, so here's the reality for everyone.  I am not talking about FB or anything else on line.  I am talking about this forum.

We can't talk politics, religion, or controversial topics.  Add to that NO personal experiences, nothing about our daily lives, illnesses, interactions with others, photos . . . leaving only one thing we can discuss . . .

QVC PRODUCTS !!!

. . . which leaves me, for one, with absolutely nothing to write about!!  Might as well sink this ship!!

Nobody in this thread is telling you that you can't talk about personal experiences, etc.  They're just pointing out (correctly, IMO) that it doesn't make sense for someone who is wary of Facebook to post personal information here, when the information is not any safer...and may very well be less safe.

@WenGirl42

I would never put the info on FB that I discuss here.  I only have photos and short "Happy Birthdays" on FB and NOTHING in my profile, or whatever it's called, not even my birth date.  So I am not "wary" about FB.  I posted the warning more for everyone here, not myself.

I also didn't say people were telling me not to post personal information, I said if that was what the criteria is, I would have nothing to say at all.

And no one can convince me the thing that happened on FB could also happen here.  Nobody even knows about this forum.  Yes, it does go to Google and that ticked me off when I saw it.  QVC should have prevented that from happening.

@LilacTree... do you remember the art work you posted from your daughter. Posters were very upset because it lead directly to her Facebook Page.

I am not saying this should upset you but that is just how easy it is to forget that information from this forum is just as out there as Facebook.

@Trinity11

Yes, I do remember.  She was fine with it because she has a public website and gets business from it.  She wants it to be online.  One cannot get very far running a business if they don't want anyone looking at their website.

But that made you far less anonymous here.  The end result of linking the two of you together in that way is that a lot of information was instantly available and a whole lot more could be figured out easily.

Even on a calm, no controversy day, very few things get the people who post on these boards worked up more than a conversation on Facebook does.

Everyone has their own comfort level.  Use Facebook, don't use it.  We can all do whatever we'd like.  It's a beautiful thing.

But I always get a kick out of the people who trash Facebook and turn their noses down on it who have never even been on it.  It's not the evil enemy everyone.  It's a social platform.  It's like me saying I hate hummus, when I've never even tried it.

Again, my comfort level is that I'm going to continue using Facebook.  It brings me far more joy than discomfort.  I worry about tons of things going on in our lives right now, but Facebook doesn't even hit my radar.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

The OP should take her own advice, every detail of her family life has been posted here for a long time.

To be fearful of FB is overkill, when it comes to anything on the internet, CAUTIOUS is the word.    The internet is here to stay.   Can't get a job without it now, everything is online and no amount of security is foolproof.

Facebook doesn't have any information about me that isn't already out there in a zillion other places. Honestly, I think a mountain is being made of a molehill over this current issue.

if an app is "free,"  chances are you are a product to be sold.

I would suggest that we not post anything personal on Facebook until we see what happens with Mark Zuckerberg, who is in hiding.

@LilacTree

I only read the first page of posts, so sorry if my comments are redundant.

First of all .....  WHY is anyone surprised by personal information getting out?  If you joined FB, you AGREED to let them use your information "for marketing purposes".

That Terms of Use agreement is a LEGAL CONTRACT.

Secondly .....   for those that didn't bother to read the TOU agreement ..... just HOW do you think FB makes their money?   Do you pay a monthly fee for using FB?  Uh, no, it's FREE .....  and the stock is selling for more than $160 a share!

If you're not paying for this "service" they must be making their money somewhere else ... right?

Thirdly ....  just what does anyone expect Mark Zuckerberg to say about him doing what he's always done?   oi vey!

Okay, I'll get off my soap box.

I just find it mind-boggling that anyone is indignant over this whole thing.     FB collects and mines information, and has done so since Day One.

If you sign or agree to the terms in any legal contract, READ the darn thing!

@Tinkrbl44

I am in agreement with you on this.

My “beef” is with the info being used by another country in such an integrated manner.  However, I don’t blame Z.  What can he or FB do about it anyway? You can’t police the whole world and I do want to partake of all the good things technology has to offer.

For instance, I just downloaded the picture of this young lady who is in critical condition because she was shot Monday at her high school.

How? I went to her FB page, which has been structured to allow access to photos allowed (by her parents, I assume). No comments are allowed.

FB is different than any other social media, IMO.

It can be used for good and useful things.

It is corporations and small businesses that don't want their customers or their employees who also use it data mined.  Any business that uses facebook and has a link to it from their business website has their IT dept on the pulse of this issue and it is they who are bringing this to the forefront and to the SEC.  Businesses have a lot to lose if customers don't feel comfortable using facebook when it is representing their business.  They know better what is going on than the average joe.
