Facebook will pay a record $5bn fine to settle privacy concerns, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has said. The social network must also establish an independent privacy committee that Facebook's chief executive Mark Zuckerberg will not have control over.Jul 24, 2019

  • But privacy advocates don't think the measures go far enough, particularly because they don't impact how Facebook collects and monetize user information.
  • Much of the power remains in Facebook's hands, and the new rules don't do anything to change the financial motivation the company has to collect and monetize user data.

That still doesn't make Facebook evil.

It is all up to how the user chooses to use it.

Re: Facebook and Public Accounts

I en;joy Facebook.  I am a member to several interest groups.  I enjoy the newsfeed...  I enter many sweepstakes and contests.... I like to post about helping or saving animals on my page. I do not have many friends... by choice.  I do not post often.  But it is a good outlet for sharing and chatting with people who share common interests. There is even a really nice QVC group that we share information  and even sell things to each other that we bought on QVC and HSN that we no longer use or wear like clothes and jewelry.

@Sunshine Kate  I totally agree with you! After having a facebook account for 9 years, I totally deleted it. I got tired of looking at people's kids, their pets, where they went out to eat, etc. I find it has freed me up so much. I am making much better use of my time and I don't miss it at all. I will never go back again. Bye, bye, social media!

Re: Facebook and Public Accounts

maybe a good idea they are doing this......especially for privacy and other related issues. if anyone wants to access these pages or businesses they can create an account.

LOVE facebook for both personal and professional use. nothing beats some free advertising and easy communication with customers.

have never had any issues.

Re: Facebook and Public Accounts

I did not read all the replies, so if this has been posted already forgive me.  Facebook is going through a big change right now, so it's probably not the businesses doing it, but Facebood doing it.

Facebook keeps trying to force me to go to the "new look" which I hate, so currently I am changing it back to the old look for 48 hours.  It's just been this last week that changing back only lasts 48 hours.  At some point it won't let me change back.  Luckily, I think I have a link that will force it back to the old look by making Facebook think that I'm on an older OS which won't support their new format.  The apps I currently use to customize my experience and filter out some of the stuff I don't want to see, like Sponsored Posts and Political posts, currently have not been updated to work with the new look, so this is what they have come up with as hopefully a temporary fix.  Facebook is always trying to break the 3rd party apps that let people customize their Facebook experience to the way THEY like it.

Sadly, even if the app I'm using finally gets updated, I still won't get the experience I like since I use another app to delete that awful 3rd column and stretch out my newsfeed.  The new look is all scrunched up and way too busy.

Re: Facebook and Public Accounts

All those with a ‘fake’ FB account, it’s still spying on you and tracking everything you do online.
