I just read this sad news elsewhere online.

My heart goes out to this brave man, and I hope he does not suffer, however he seeks treatment.

I've always respected him and his wife, Elizabeth Dole.  Prayers and positive thoughts for both of them.

Yes, a wrenching decision.  He must have his reasons for soldiering on with treatment.  Praying for the least amount of suffering for this brave man.

@golding76,  I just realized I unconsiously repeated several of your exact words and thoughts!   Must have resonated with me.

I have such respect and admiration for this couple. After just losing someone else so many admire to lung cancer I’m sad to see this news.

If he hadn't agreed to the treatment, the cancer would metastasize to his bones and his brain.  No one wants THAT.  I've seen the aftermath and the suffering from exactly that type of cancer metastasizing.

The World War II veteran, age 97, who has faced down much medical adversity in his life, has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.  So very sorry to hear this, as it must have been crushing to get this diagnosis at age 97.   He will embark on treatment on Monday.

His statement, courtesy of the Wall Street Journal which relayed his tweet:

“While I certainly have some hurdles ahead, I know that I join millions of Americans who face significant health challenges of their own,” said Mr. Dole, 97 years old, in a tweet Thursday morning. He said he would start treatment Monday.

Wishing Senator Dole all the very best during this difficult time.  What spunk he shows.

I do so admire him!  And I am grateful that so many people (including me) are praying for him and rooting for the very best.  Life certainly isn't easy and cancer at any age is a huge added challenge.

I do think as well, encouragement, prayer and support of friends and family and even those of us here, does make a big difference!

You have no way of knowing that.

Wishing Mr. Dole all the best.

Perhaps the treatments of which he speaks are palliative.

Just days ago I learned a relative of mine also has Stage IV lung cancer. Cancer at this stage has already metastasized.

My relative is a hard working family man. Everything that man does is to benefit his family. Less than 3 weeks ago he walked into tbe Drs office complaining of unbearable pain that he couldn't stand any longer, and got a diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer.

Due to this late stage diagnosis, the doctor convinced my relative to take chemo in an effort to buy him more time. After one chemo treatment he has said that's enough, no more treatment. He has taken care of business, and told the Dr to get him set up with Hospice care. Last I heard, he was estimated to have 2 weeks.

I was so very saddened to hear this news.  After everything he has been through in his life and then at this age to get this kind of diagnosis!  I wish him the very best in whatever decision he makes for his treatment.

Treatment is often given for palliative reasons, not curative.  Nobody wants to see some of the things that can and do occur without some kind of treatment to palliate the patient at this point.  Not all treatment offered up is curative and not all patients understand that.
