The World War II veteran, age 97, who has faced down much medical adversity in his life, has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.  So very sorry to hear this, as it must have been crushing to get this diagnosis at age 97.   He will embark on treatment on Monday.

His statement, courtesy of the Wall Street Journal which relayed his tweet:

“While I certainly have some hurdles ahead, I know that I join millions of Americans who face significant health challenges of their own,” said Mr. Dole, 97 years old, in a tweet Thursday morning. He said he would start treatment Monday.

Wishing Senator Dole all the very best during this difficult time.  What spunk he shows.

I'm so sorry to hear that.I have to say that I give him credit for persevering. At 97 I personally would not seek treatment.I wish him a comfortable speedy recovery.💐

At his age and the stage of this disease, I think the chemo will backfire and take him very fast.  😔

I can't imagine wanting to take on treatment at that age.  Good luck to him.  I hope he's making the decision and not his family.

I'm very sorry to hear this.  I always liked Elizabeth and him.  I would not seek treatment at age 97 I don't think.  He must be doing well otherwise and want to keep going.

Maybe Bob wants to live to reach "a century."

This is sad news. He has overcome a lot in his past. I will join a lot of others who don't really know him in wishing him and his family comfort.

My sisters and I were discussing this earlier and we decided at 97 we would also not seek treatment.
