I noticed the same thing at just the same time OP did.

And it is different than ones I've seen before.

I also called my mom, because I have seen these supposedly once every 30 day type alerts/tests about 4 times in the last month. Her TV runs just about 24/7 and I had wondered if she was seeing them as often as I have noticed them.

Kind of has me wondering why the increase in frequency, and the change in 'format' if you will, and what kind of chatter or stuff 'they' may know or be concerned about.

I won't be one to incite panic, but it does make me more aware and questioning as to what might be going on. And I think anyone who had seen this as many times as I have in the last month or so, would come to the same conclusion.

I am taking into account that perhaps they are running the at different times on different networks etc. but still, they have been way more frequent than anything I have ever experienced.

@Mominohio Several posters including myself have provided FEMA's statement of their planned test today. if you need additional information google "FEMA test"

@JaneMarple

It isn't about today, It is about the fact that these 'tests' in general have been, in my view, increasing in frequency lately. I have seen at least four of them in the last month, and am simply sharing that I have never seen that many of these 'tests' in such a short period of time.

That is because they do it WEEKLY and they have for years. Imagine that.

No subterfuge or agenda.

The ones that run across our screens with the screeching sound are only done monthly. The simple banner scrolls without sound maybe more frequently, but what I have seen in the last month or so isn't the same old 'tests' I've seen in the past. Perhaps they have new graphics and new procedures, but I am really amused at how some of you are so quick to assume that 'nothing is different'. Just go with that if it makes you feel good, and let others who have some questions about it feel free to investigate without your finger wagging.

After all, we have the system for a reason, so why not question if there is/might be more than normal reason to need it, since seeing it more frequently?

Apparently in 2011 the system was tested without desirable results.

All of the information I'm seeing pertaining to this test today has to do with making sure your neighbor's are in the know about any emergency --

Yeah, that's why I just wish I could opt out.   I'm not one of those 'I don't like this, so nobody should have it' people.  I'd just like the option to opt out because it is like fingernails on a blackboard times ten (million!).

My ear-ringing is STILL in high gear (REEEEEEE) since that EAS thing this morning.   Sometimes, when a loud, sudden, or high-pitched sound happens my tinnitis will be kicked up for days after.  Smiley Sad

I get far more alarming warnings on my cell.

Be it a severe storm, Amber Alert or Silver Alert.

I appreciate them and don't look at them as a nuisance. They sound that way becaue they want your attention, duh...shrug.

Hi Plaid!  Yeah, that's what I do too.  But you never have any warning and by the time I can get to the remote the damage is already done.  If I didn't have severe tinnitis, it probably wouldn't be a problem for me either.  Smiley Happy

Broadcasters and cable operators will need to bone up for a test this fall.

The FCC has set Sept. 28, 2016, at 2:20 p.m. for a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

The backup date is Oct. 5 and broadcasters and cable operators, who have to participate in the test, must be ready for either date.

The FCC is conducting the test in coordination with FEMA, with a focus on FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) that disseminates the alerts to the various participants.

I never saw the FEMA green banner.  We have a weekly EAS test with the red banner, though.
