Re: FDA has authorized emergency use of chloroquine

I was given Plaquenil some years ago when I was deathly ill from an auto immune disorder.  It has nasty side effects. That said, it brought me back from the walking dead.

I will caution to watch for odd thoughts/behaviors on this. My compound pharmacist cautioned me that it can induce psychosis.

Re: FDA has authorized emergency use of chloroquine

Another anecdotal success story, Bon Jovi's keyboardist David Bryan.

"He immediately called his doctor, Dr. Mike Rothberg of Brick, NJ, who had access to drive-by testing for the coronavirus, which involved a deep swab up his nose. Two days later, Bryan was informed that he was positive and was immediately prescribed antibiotics — Azithromycin  and hydroxychloroquine (the “anti- malaria drug”) — which he started on Saturday. Two days later, Bryan reports that the medicine is working and he is “getting stronger” while remaining in self-isolation with his wife, Alexis. She, too, has tested positive but is not displaying any of the same symptoms except for a “slight headache for a couple of days.”

@tucsongal I am too.  DH has been taking Plaqueil (or hydroxychloriquine ) for years for his autoimmune illness.

He was able to just get a refill for 1 month even though he requested 3 months.  I'm afraid that if he can't get it he might not be able to walk and will need a wheelchair...this is scary!

Re: FDA has authorized emergency use of chloroquine

A new bill was signed called The Right To Try. This bill gives terminally I'll patients the right to take medications and/or treatments not yet fully tested and approved by the FDA.

I personally think this is a bill that was needed. Everyone has read or heard of celebrities or high powered individuals going out of our country to get treatments not FDA authorized. Most seem to be primarily cancer treatments.

Were I terminally I'll, I would want the decision left up to me, with any treatment that has shown promise on others with a similar illness. Why should anyone, with all their mental faculties working, be denied a possible life saving treatment?

For Covid-19 why would a patient that is close to being diagnosed as terminal, be denied this Malaria drug in combination with Zpak meds, if they do choose?

Re: FDA has authorized emergency use of chloroquine

I agree.

In addition, Ive never understood withholding pain meds.

from an extremely ill person because ( in their past) they

had a prior issue with drugs or alcohol.

Does it matter if the close to death patient gets “addicted”

or “abuses” such drugs...at this point?

I saw Dr. OZ last week say that he is personally funding a $250,000

clinical trial/study of the 2-drug combo prevention/“cure”.

He interviewed a famous Dr. in France who has had great success with

using the combo. for Covid patients who were severely ill.

I hate to to say it, but I think Trumps enthusiasm seems justified, at least for the hundreds/dozens who’ve had success with it.

Anything that can help *should* be allowed in severe cases.

@Kachina624  You make that statement and bet based on what?  Your dislike for President Trump?

In fact, it has been used in France and, I believe, South Korea and has shown to reduce the symptioms of the disease.  It has also been used sparinngly in the US with good results.

Yes, it can have side-effects, as can any drug.  That's why it is taken under the care of a doctor.

Re: FDA has authorized emergency use of chloroquine

As an RN, I would take it in a heartbeat.  In my opinion, the benefit much outweighs the risks.

One has been around since the 1940's, the other the 1990's.  If they were generally unsafe, we'd know by now.  I would be willing to take them early on if I were diagnosed with coronavirus.

EVERY SINGLE DRUG has side effects.  These would only be given for a short time.  Sign me up if needed.

@haddon9

There have been companies that have already way increased production of it.  So I think your husband will be able to get it.
