My husband is the worst. Scares me to ride with him. Yet every time I leave to go out he says "be careful ... there are crazy drivers out there."

I think the highest speed limit on this island is 35 mph. You really don't see speeders, people just sort of plug along. Fine with me. Lots of foot traffic and beach bikes year round.
We travel quite a bit on road trips. I love to drive, and am usually the one in the driver's seat. I wouldn't want to drive a car at this point as I wouldn't feel safe on a highway. Don't think we'll ever own one again. I like being able to see above and beyond what's ahead of the guy in front of me and what's in front of him and on and on.
The texting has gotten out of hand and the people who love to dart in and out of lanes and even pass on shoulders. I'm always waiting to see the hood and parts of their car debris flying up over other innocent drivers, hoping no one who's driving sensibly gets hurt.

@on the bay I am very glad that no one was physically hurt. I have also noticed how aggressive drivers are being and I do not do much driving outside of my immediate area. I used to drive quite a bit to our beaches and the speed limit is about 65, but cars and trucks easily do over 90 and that includes state troopers, but I have lost the desire to even drive to the beach.

I've gotten to feeling the same way.

'Around here', it's very common for drivers to speed through red lights.
So, we wait a few seconds, making sure that the intersections are clear and that crossing traffic has stopped.
Some drivers just don't seem to care.
Why? I don't know. Maybe allergy pills, certain meds, etc. Too much caffeine? Who knows........

p.s. Thank goodness your SIL (and others) weren't injured.
Good luck always.
And keep safe, everyone.

I tell my children and grandkids to be aware that just because the light turns green or, it's your turn at a 4 way stop, doesn't mean you can go. Too many crazies don't pay attention. Here we ALWAYS have cars
making a left turn in front of oncoming traffic. I see near misses every time I get out. As aware as I am, it happened to me three weeks ago. A car shot out across our two lanes, driver cleared the left lane but because of the traffic pattern she didn't see me in the right lane and I didn't see her crossing in front of us. We had the green light and all both lanes moving smoothly. I slammed on my brakes but was too close to avoid hitting her. Long story short, I was taken to the hospital with a broken arm, I had to have surgery with a plate and pins to repair it. My car is totaled and I'm starting PT. No one else was injured (3 children and the driver in the other vehicle). I thank God for that daily.
I'm going to suggest that if you witness an accident, please take a moment to stop. Just leave your name and number if you can't stay. I was hysterical, in pain and a man came to my car, he saw the whole thing and it was not my fault. He put his business card on the the seat and left. Thank goodness! The driver lied to the police and told them I was totally to blame, that everyone was stopped but me and she had green arrow to turn. Without that witness, the officer would have no reason to believe me. People are not only aggressive but they lie also! It's a sad world. Sorry this is so long.

@on the bay wrote:My daughter just texted that her husband was hit by a car going 70
on the highway-he spun out but fortunately wasn't hit by other cars and said he's ok but the car isn't.
My son and mother and I were almost hit by a car going probably 90 and weaving in and out.
My other daughter and I saw 2 drivers go thru a red light at high speeds just going 1minutes down the road.
I've been reading that dirvers have been getting more reckless more angry more aggressive and impatient since more back on the road.
So please use your defensive driving skills!
Keep checking your mirrors.
Look before going from a light turning green at an intersection.
And most of all, keep a safe distance between you and other cars. And don't go too far above the speed limit. The higher the speed the more likely it is to be a serious or fatal accident. Same with traveling too closely or "going the speed of traffic"
Just because others are super speeding doesn't mean you have to too.
Even with super reflexes as some like to think, the higher the speed, and the closer driving to others, if one stops ahead of you and you are going 70 or so, you are going to crash into someone or something too.
There are still some good drivers out there. It is the ones who aren't that it is so good to have and remember defensive driving skills. Never asume someone will do the right thing. Always expect other drivers to do the wrong thing.
It's a scary world out there. Be safe everyone with at least something we can have better control over.
I just hate to hear of so many unnecessary accidents that could be prevented.
My son in law said his hummer training in Iraq kicked in and he took his foot off the brake and let it naturally spin and stop. I would never have known that because it is probably natural to break and then of course it would spin out.
I can't wait til all are home!
Everyone stay safe ok?!
I was a UPS driver, then I drove tractor trailers for UPS in the crazy busy tri state area. After that, I drove full time for a sales job in another state over 20 years, covering 5 counties. Over this time period, I've been a couple of serious accidents. Driving my own car, I was t boned by a women driving 40-45 MPH thru a red light, both brand NEW cars were 100% totalled by the insurance companies, I was hospitalized in critical condition. Many times you don't fully recover from accidents like that. I could write a book on driving, accidents and injuries.
I'm happy to hear your son in law is fine. I can't help but be skeptical he was hit by a car going 70 mph and he has no injuries. A car hit at 70 mph, even a new car with advanced safety features, would likely be totalled and the occupants seriously injured. We've all seen or read the Consumer Reports and NTSB auto safety testing, what happens, the extent of damage when a car impacts going only 25 or 40 mph.
Here's my advice- he should be seen by a doctor ASAP, if only to start a paper trail in case he starts to notice accident involved injuries in the coming weeks or months. Most states has laws regarding the length of time you have to visit a doctor after an accident, in order to pursue a medical claim. In my state it's only 14 days. Not all injuries are apparent right away, in fact most aren't. I hope he is OK.
ETA- What happened to the occupants of the car going 70 that hit him? Were they fine too?
