A co-worker's mother died last month. She was very poor and lived with family. She had a small life insurance policy. It wasn't enough to cover the entire funeral and burial costs. The family divided up the rest.
Her mother has outstanding medical bills. Does her family need to divide those up and pay them? I would think since her family didn't incur the bills, the creditors would have to write them off. My co-worker and her siblings aren't financially well off and since her mother did not want to be cremated, the burial costs they've already paid have tapped them out.
Told her I'd see if anyone here has been in a similar situation before she spends the money to check with a lawyer.
Thanks!
