That reminds me of co-worker who contracted a foot infection when she was vacationing in Italy. This was about 10 years ago. She was sightseeing, she was wearing sandals and she stumbled and scraped her little toe on a stone pathway. It didn't bother much during her trip, she put some ointment and a bandaid on it and she was fine. A few days after she returned her toe was swollen and red and throbbing, she went to the emergency room and was treated for an infection, they gave her antibiotics. Well, it was a nightmare that went on for a year. She was in and out of the hospital, received all types of iv antibiotics and nothing controlled the infection. It went from her toe to her entire foot. The doctors here couldn't identify the infection. They consulted with doctors in Italy. It didn't spread past her foot but one doctor said that if it did spread, they might have to consider amputation. She had to go out on disability and lost about 50lbs, which present another set of medical problems because was not a heavy person. They never did identify the organism that caused the infection but after months and months and many hospitalizations, she slowly recovered.
