Eliminating US SAVINGS BONDS

I went to the bank to buy a bond for my niece's son for his birthday and they told me that after this year the bonds have been eliminated.You will no longer be able to buy US Savings bonds after Dec 31. The ones you have will continue to be good but they won't be available anymore.In a time when our government needs funds so desparately this seems foolish to me - they should be selling bonds in school and advertising on TV for patriotic citizens to support their country and buy bonds instead of doing this.Heck - they practically paid for WW11 with war bonds - this is so sad.
