I too was stunned at the news this morning. At 68 years old, he is gone too soon, and certainly at a time when his voice and ethics are desperately needed. Rest in peace, Congressman. You were a force to be reckoned with and gave your all to your country. Thank you for your dedication.

Waking to this News I was gutted.

Representative Cummings was a voice of reason, kindness, dignity, courage, and fairness in this time when such is sorely needed.  Remembering his words of calm and thoughtfulness During the riots in his home city, highlights the loss our country has suffered.

Wishing Blessings, Goodwill, and Peace to Mr. Cummings, and his family.

EC did not look well for some time, I don't know how he kept going. I have always admired him and was thankful we had such a smart, honest, selfless person looking out for us and doing the work . Who out of these young politicians will take up where he  left off, with the kindness and grace this man embodied! Elijah will be missed.

Yeah, he was using a walker for the better part of the summer.

Maybe that was related to his illness?

@MorningLover

A great loss for my home State of Maryland, and a great loss for our country.

A gentle, brilliant man who gave his all until the end.

I share in everyone’s grief for the loss of a great statesman. One of seven children born to parents who were poor sharecroppers, Elijah Cummings spoke movingly of their values of hard work, humility and kindness.

At the age of 11 he and some friends heard about a town swimming pool that was recently integrated to allow African Americans access for the first time. As the children splashed in the pool, a crowd of whites in the hundreds surrounded them, screaming filth and threats and throwing bottles. One bottle hit Elijah in the forehead and he carried that scar the rest of his life. A woman he didn’t know at the time mopped the blood from his face and ushered him through the ugly throng. He found out that she was a civil rights activist and decided that day he would follow her path.

The rest is history. He graduated with honors from Howard University, was student body president and went on to graduate from Univ, of Maryland Law School. Heaven’s gain is our loss.

Oh and by the way, many decades later Elijah Cummings was approached by a white man who said he wanted to apologize. When Cummings asked him why, the man said I was one of that terrifying mob who threw bottles at you. Of course,  Elijah forgave him. What I would give to see such decency, integrity and humanity again.
