I got a message from Apple about their upgrade OS El Capitan. I installed it and almost immediately I started having problems. First, I could not shut it down or restart it or force quit it the proper way. I had to power it off, which is very hard on the Hard Drive. Next my keyboard started acting wonky and wouldn't let me type words. Instead, it shot out a whole line of dots or symbols and beeped over and over. Then, I was unable to log in after it was in sleep mode. It also would not let me go to certain websites. It just stuck on the website url and wouldn't move. I had none of these problems with Yosemite. After a week and a half of constantly powering off my computer, over two hours on the phone with Apple tech support, and two separate appointments in person at the "Genius Bar" in the Apple store, I may have things working again. However, I now have a week and a half of troubleshooting hours that I will never get back. I am still having some problems with the keyboard, but I put fresh batteries in, hoping that the dynamics will change. Has Mac user here had problems with el capitan?

Gosh, that's unusual.
I'm still using Yosemite.

I haven't had any problems. I'm sorry you are.

Hi, @RainCityWoman! My goodness, what a mess this sounds like for you! I installed El Capitan the day it was released (edited to say I have an older iMac, mid 2011) and I've had no problems. Did the installation go well, without interruptions? Have you updated to OS X 10.11.1? I suppose the support folks had you try this, but in case they didn't -- have you performed a boot to Safe Mode and then returned to a regular boot? Also, what kind of Apple computer do you have?

I am still using Yosemite. I am not going to install EC until v.10.11.3. The bugs should be mostly ironed out by then.
You should NEVER upgrade an OS until you have first confirmed that ALL of your software & hardware are compatible w/the new OS.
This is what I have been doing. Checking w/the 3rd party manufacturers. Right now, my external drive which I use for backups is questionable. The version I have is still kind of iffy regarding compatibility for EC. I think I may be safe. However, I will know for certain by EC v3.
I suspect your problems/issues are due to compatibility. Regarding your wireless keyboard, I strongly recommend that you post in Apple's forums - Bluetooth Keyboard forum.

The guy at the Genius Bar did that yesterday just before he thought he was going to have to erase my whole hard drive. I think it worked.....so far. This was the OS 10.11.1 that I installed. My friend installed his before he read my message and it diabled his computer for a day. He finally got it to work, but it is now extremely slow. They told me at Apple that it's probably the other software I have on my machine that isn't interacting well with El Capitan. I hope tha wireless keyboard behaves the rest of the day. I've had one bad incident with it this morning. I WISH I wasn't so addicted and dependent on computers. My life would be so much simpler. I'm just hoping my IPad continues to function.

Forgot to say that the guy removed my old backup drive software and I bought a brand new one which was installed yesterday. I had problems with that, too, because it was formatted for a PC, and even though they had a spot to click for Mac, it wasn't working. The genius guy solved that, but I have to say that the people at Seagate who manufactured the drive, got back to me immediately and sent a long, easy to understand list of things I could do to get it installed properly. By that time, I didn't need the list, but I give them props for getting back to me right away.

That's good. Booting in Safe Mode and then going back to a normal boot can clear up a myriad of problems and won't hurt anything. To be honest, I've had no problems at all, not even any change in response time or any new appearances of the dreaded spinning beach ball.
Which Apple device do you have?
There are a few articles online if you do a search for something like "El Capitan problems" but I haven't experienced any of the reported issues (so far, at least).

We installed it without issues.

There are MANY known problems with El Capitan that run the gamet from conflicts with Firefox, printers, local hosts, Mail app, Microsoft Office and Exchange server apps, and even hardware glitches. You can see lots of them being discussed on the Apple Community boards and also just by googling. Apple has released a couple of fixes already in subsequent updates, but they've got a lot more to deal with. I've had several glitches, but I'm one of the lucky ones. Many people I know have had to deal with many more problems than I have. So, it's not just you, RainyDayGirl!
