Yes @Tinkrbl44  the only ones banded are very little, does not hurt, those wires you see if you go to Miami nest he gently puts them in a dark bag, like a humans operation.

Old enough to fit an ankle bracelet.  I think it is wonderful.

Ron's girlfriend would have died it not banded, found 3 days later, 6 miles away or so.  They knew who she was.

I have mentioned it before, she has only one wing but they have built her a beautiful enclosure.  Rita is an an American Eagle  Ambassador.  She is quite happy in her new home finally and handlers with a swimmimg pool, and all the goodies.  She enjoys her visitors now. She was critical for so long.  Rita is in in Marathon, Key West Florida. I think she is about 14 years but hit something bad, who knows.  Smiley Sad But It's not perfect, yet she is ok and hope she forgets the wild.

@Tinkrbl44 @Pink123   no they don't band the eagles.  They said it proved too traumatic, and they do not want to traumatize or sedate them.  I know in some sanctuaries they do band. O followed a Blue Jay for years that wa banded. That's how they knew the old guy was measly,15 when he died. He was the oldest ever that sanctuaries had followed.  Big Bear is a natural habitat, and sadly they don't even assist if eaglet falls out of tree or is injured.  But they have treated birds before that were injured. I am not sure what guidelines they have for doing so.   But the FOTBBL group did say before they will not band The eagles. It woukd be nice, but not worth loosing them.  You know us Californians, lol, too independent to tolerate being pinned down lol lol we are just so lucky Shadow and Jackie have made the lake their home!!!!

Yes @shoekitty  yes feelings are mixed on this banding issue.

In Florida it is legal maybe not in all counties, who knows?

For our Miami Eagle family I think it has its scientific purposes too to observe where they go and life span. Like one of the juvies R5 his name funny enough was spotted on a Coral Gables golf course a few weeks ago.  Some of them have stayed within 5 or 6 miles of the area.  It's interesting.

Yes, Jackie and Shadow are lucky hidden high up in Big bear.  Ron and Rita (now Ron and Rose) are very safe too.  They are in South Miami, I think I know where they are.  They live on private property.  Next door are multi million dollar homes and so they are very safe.  However......this is really funny and you will crack up too laughing.  Below on the ground of this guys personal land are home to 15 peacocks!!!  They sound like cats meowing, I kid you not.

So one year one of the eaglets fell out of the nest and the peacocks came running after R2, he could not fly.  Within minutes one of Wildlife rescue came to his aid and brought him safely back to a nest.  It is on camera somewhere, but I forgot.  So funny.  R2 was a little rascal who caused havoc that year.

I love them all.  Some just don't have it so good, and feel bad for them. A  hard life living in the wild.

Lazy Days and a Surprise Drop In…

Eagle Image

Jackie and/or Shadow have been seen in the habitat on camera every day since their grand record-breaking stick-a-palooza! It seems maybe they needed a few days to rest, reflect and regroup before continuing nestorations.

Friday they both showed up stickless and checked out the nest’s progress, possibly doing an inventory count of how many more sticks they will need.

Shadow stood still waiting for Jackie, they both tinkered with a few sticks, but ultimately ended up perching and watching over the habitat. Shadow came down from his perch to do a bit of clean up when Jackie joined him but seemed to have a change of heart after looking at all those sticks!

They both moved to the front porch where they spent some quiet time until something caught their eye, Jackie rushed out while Shadow took his time, checking out the situation and soon followed.

They spent two hours mostly perching and looking out over the valley. Bald Eagles spend up to 90% of their day perching.

Jackie and Shadow both flew in with some sticks later in the afternoon. Shadow stopped in one more time to check in before heading out to roost for the night. Soon Jackie circled the nest and, to Shadow’s surprise, landed in the canopy!

Shadow seemed confused at why Jackie was way up there in Sunny’s landing spot but went about his business of making needed adjustments to the nest… until… Jackie just seemed to fall from the sky, making a grand entrance and startling Shadow at the same time!

Did you know? The nest tree is equipped with an infrared light (IR) so the camera can view the nest, eagles and other visitors at night. The light is not visible to the eagles or humans. For Jackie and Shadow, the nest is in complete darkness.

Thank you all for joining us in Jackie & Shadow’s journey…
