I've been out all day and have only watched intermittently.  A neighbor said there was a small dead bird at the far end of the nest, now covered with snow.

All I can wonder is where the heck is Shadow with the daily catch?  In this weather, do the fish go deeper in the lake, making it harder for an eagle to swoop down and grab it?

When I think about igloos, I recall that snow can be an insulator.  Perhaps the snow encircling the nest is actually protecting the babies from the wind?

Or is the problem when it's this cold, are the parents  more concerned with keeping the babies warm and let them skip a meal or two?

I am not sure what your neighbor is looking at but to my knowledge there is no dead eaglet.

I follow the official FB group for Big Bear Bald Eagles, no one is reporting this.

Also, Shadow took over duties hours ago, allowing Jackie to take off and do whatever she does. (smile)

They (Admin) also answers questions.

Example: Where is Shadow during the Storm?

During inclement weather Shadow usually perches in a nearby tree.

Two beaks are better than one…

As we witnessed last night, a series of winter storms will be moving through in the next few days bringing some snowfall to the area. Jackie is such an amazing super mom, withstanding these storms like a pro. We may worry about her at times, but she always shows us her strength and fortitude as she covers and protects her chicks with every ounce of her being. She is an amazing example to all of us to remain calm and stay the course and good things will be waiting for us when we persevere.

Jackie and Shadow instinctively prepare when inclement weather is on the way. Yesterday was all about just that! Their 3rd feeding (of 11 in total) brought big smiles to their beloved fans as we were treated to both parents feeding the chicks together. Shadow handled Chicks1&2, while Jackie fed Chick3. A dual feeding seemed super effective and productive as all the chicks received ample amounts of food. This could help avoid bonking and sibling rivalry so Jackie and Shadow may be learning some new things having three chicks in the nest.

Jackie may also be becoming a bit more tolerant, realizing with Shadow there to help her is a good thing. As long as he brings more food, it's all going to be okay… and he hasn't let her down! Yesterday he delivered 3 fish, 5 sticks, and 3 piles of fluff! Once again, we can follow the example of the eagles and Shadow's motto of “Be Prepared”! (hey, was he a former eagle scout?)

Soon we will notice the little love nuggets growing by leaps and bounds. In another week or so, their Natal down will be replaced by Thermal down and they will be able to stay warmer on their own.

Some of Shadow's favorite moments of being a Dad seem to be those quiet bonding times when he's just sitting with his chicks and they are curiously peeking out from under him, nipping at his feathers or simply a gentle beak-to-beak moment. He's such a loving and attentive Dad!

This morning, after the storm, Shadow was waiting patiently in the snowfall on a basement branch below the nest for Jackie's call. He just came in to check on her and the kids but she decided to stay for now. We had a peek at the chicks and all look well! Just like his beloved mate, his dedication to his family is a wonderful example to all of us. How special it is for us to learn from them!

@Mz iMac @Tinkrbl44 @icezeus    I know there ar exam moderators as well as ornithologists that watch the cam. Do you think if Shadow was hurt, they would send someone to help him?   I know in some situations scientists and such don't get involved with nature, but when some things happen they do. Especially if something as important as apthe survival of the clutch was at stake. But I don't know if they do this for Eagles

@shoekitty

First I went up thread and corrected the name of the baby eagle. I called it a bird the correct name is eaglet.

To answer your question I am not sure if they would or not. I would like to think that if possible they would.

I'm on  a facebook page for the eagles, Shadow is fine, he usually stays away on a nearby tree in bad weather. The eaglets were stuffed yesterday in their extra pouch, mom and dad knew the bad weather was coming.  They don't hunt in bad weather but they will scavenge.  Shadow did come and relieve her to go potty earlier.

For the most part I couldn't watch today, scientist did explain that they are equipped for this weather and the nest has sustained 40-70n mph winds before so the nest should be fine, still hard to watch.

Looks like a chick is missing, so sad.  I think it was the one that Shadow accidently pierced with his claw.
