The drug screen is looking for illegal/recreational drugs that you might be using. If you disclose what you are on before the test, there will be no problem. As others have advised, I would bring the prescription bottle along.

^This. This poster certainly wouldn't be the only employee taking a prescription med.

makeup addict: It will be fine and congrats on your new job.

Most drug screens are looking for illegal/recreational drugs in the system. Take your script bottle with you and let them know before the test. Chances are it's not what they are testing for.

And no poppy seed bagels before the test!

I dont drink and the meds I take for fibro are not addicting. Im allergic to codeine; makes me hyper and gives me insomia. Advil makes me sleepy. Smiley Happy

Hi makeup addict,

When I applied for a job with the Department of Depense, I knew this could very well be an issue, because it was in a huge medical center. So...before I even put my prescription bottle in my handbag, I had my internist's assistant type up a note he had dictated indicating that this medication was needed for ____________ condition.

You see, when the DoD does its initial drug testing for potential employees, they test for many, many drugs (not just the illegal stuff), so I felt I really needed that letter and really, really wanted that job.

Well, I got the job, so am happy that I had the letter to present to them.

(One of the things I did not have for them was my vaccination records. I mean, if you're a civilian, do you walk around or have in your house your vaccination or childhood disease records? My mother threw them away for heaven's sake. When I told this to the LT, he just had this look on this face like, "You've got to be kidding!" So, they sent me to the lab to have titres run on all the childhood diseases. It turned out to be interesting. Simply put I have the highest number of antibodies for mumps & polio, and far lesser for measles, chicken pox and German measles.)

Edited to confirm what the poster above said: ete nothing with poppy seeds in it from now forward, as it will give a false-positive for a controlled substance. This is why you'll never see any military person eating a poppy seed or "anything" bagel.

If you have a prescription, it should not be an issue. I actually cannot believe that Tramadol is now considered a narcotic.

I think the purpose of the drug screen is ILLEGAL drugs..and anything prescribed legally by your MD is good.

Re: Drug screen for job- will this be an issue?

Tramadol is synthetic medication and the least abused..the rate of abuse is very very low..believe me they are not even thinking of Tramadol...

On a side note lol if you can find a MD to prescribe whatever you want - Tramadol is not going to be the drug chosen lol..

Your MD prescribed it for you..good enough for me. You don't need to justify to us or them how often you take it, refilled etc. It is all good lol..

Great news on the job!

I have been told each time that they test for illegal drugs, not prescription drugs.

Prescription drugs that aren't prescribed are illegal. They want to make sure the person has a prescription if that drugs is in their bloodstream especially with Schedule 1,2 and 3 drugs.
