whenever we got colds or the flu as kids the doctor would give a shot of Penicillin in our rumps!    maybe medical folks back then were not aware that penicillin doesn't work on viruses. explains why we were sick at home for a week.

When i was was 3  the doctor came to the house with his black bag.  my temp was 105 according to my mother.  Doctor said German measles (Rubella).

when i was pregnant i had blood drawn for the prenatal testing and the Rubella titre showed i had never been exposed to Rubella! that was a tense 9 months...

My family doctor as a child just recently passed away.  He was in his 90's.  What a nice man he was.  I remember his nurse "Miss Brett" wearing the stark white uniform with the cap too!   She was the sweetest lady.  He was our doctor our entire childhood, into adulthood and even cared for my children up until they were 7 and 8.  That's when he retired and I remember being in tears because I knew we would never find anyone like him and while we have had a couple good physicians since then it was never the same.

I'm old enough to remember the doctor making house calls and he took care of everyone and every ailment.  No specialists.

Our family Dr. retired in 2005 and I went all through school with his sons.  I love it when I run into a classmate and they tell me Dr. J was asking how you are doing.  He moved to Austin to be with one of his twin boys so I have not seen him since 2016.  Even though he was friends with my Mom I do not think there was ever a house call.

@CelticCrafter  Doc delivered my daughter, the other Dr. in his practice delivered my son 4 yrs. later.

There were no ob/gyns in the immediate area.  The hospital had less than 50 beds. Maternity ward had 6 or 8 beds.

Your pre-natal visits were in the evenings at the hospital.  There were 3 Drs. in the area and you saw one of the 3 at your visits. That was done so you met each Dr. because whoever was on call went you into labor delivered your child.  Luckily, my Doc was on call when daughter decided to make her entrance. You paid $25 at each visit. That was the Dr. fee.

I went into hospital at 1pm on a Friday, afternoon had DD at 3:09 am Sunday.  Labor stopped and started. I came home Wed. I had to stay, had a transfusion due to blood lose.  The whole bill was $300.00.

@CrazyKittyLvr2    Believe it or not...our family doctor made house calls when I was a kid.  Many moms did not drive...dads were at work...so Dr. Brown came to the house.  I still remember his little black bag.  Times have changed.

Our Doctor also made house calls. I remember him coming several times to our house for me.

When I watch "Leave It To Beaver" the Doctor also made house calls for Beaver. That was the way it was.

PS - It made so much sense. Why take a kid into a Doctor's office if they have the measles, chicken pox or mumps? I had chicken pox, my 2 brothers never got them. My Mom was vigilant about us kids using our own cups, towels and keeping the bathroom clean. Both my brothers got the mumps. I never got them.

Well, I always got a shot of penicillin.  I don't think it mattered the malady.

My Dr was actually a woman and also made house calls....

I was a sick little kid and I remember her coming when I had Measles, Chicken Pox and Scarlet Fever. I think that's why I am pretty healthy now. I got it all out of the way early and have a good immune system....LOL

@Sage04

 That's great that they wear something to signify the " level of education " for their nursing staff
