Re: Dressing Your Age. Whaaaa?

I dress to please me.  I know what looks good on me and what doesn't.

No matter my age, I will always dress current.

Sorry, I see you've got 10 stars on this post, but I gotta say, trashy isn't as much demonstrated in how people dress, it's in how they post and how they respond to people.  JMHO.

Clearly, in this country we are free to dress as we please - however, remember those pictures of the ways some people are dressed at Walmart? They are also dressed as they please and they think they are expressing their right to wear what ever makes them happy. Whenever this subject comes up here on the boards and someone just has to go off on a tangent about wearing whatever -- my mind always goes to those Walmart people pictures.

Your mind goes to Walmart, my mind goes to those women who walk around with their noses up in the air as they walk through the stores, dressed in all the latest fashions, hair coiffed and sprayed to concrete stiffness, make-up put on with a trowel.  They are sure they are the epitome of class and style.....self-delusion goes in both directions.

I wear what I like. Period.  It is never trendy, loud or tacky. I like classic lines that never go out of season.

Re: Dressing Your Age. Whaaaa?

I dress to suit myself, and how I dressed apparently suited my late hubby too.  I'm a jeans gal, always was always will be.  I have slim jeans, straight leg jeans, cuffed trouser jeans, cut off jeans, jeans shorts, jeans capris....and whatever other jeans are out there that I can't think of right now.  I wear nice, comfy tops and very limited accesories and very little make-up (if any).  What I wear I pick to suit the weather and where I'm going as I feel is appropriate.  I have absolutely NO desire to read other people's minds for what they think is appropriate, and I don't let shopping channels, bloggers or magazines tell me what I should wear.

Re: Dressing Your Age. Whaaaa?

There are subtle differences between what looks age appropriate for myself. I always wore my skirts short but after 50, I kept them just above the knee rather than mini. I don't wear as much casual clothing because I enjoy looking elegant and getting compliments from complete strangers on what I wear. I won't wear althleisurewear because I wouldn't be comfortable in it. I like a more formal appearance because that's how I have always been. I loved when my 5 year old daughter was small and said to me "Mom, why are you wearing pearls to shop in the supermarket?" I haven't changed all that much over the years....And what I love is that my daughter is completely different than I am/was in her 40's. She embraces casual style and we get along really well...Heart

Your post does not address what I was trying to bring out in this thread, in the least. Women over 40 can dress stylish and NOT look trashy. Please. I will be 72 in a very short while and I am still called classy, so it's not necessary to paint everyone with the same brush. I see trashy in teens, 20's, 30's and up, it's not an age thing.

I am a person who carries weight around my middle - much thanks to prednisone - and hips so I can absolutely never wear skinny anything. My pants MUST be straight legs and my capris can't be those ones that are slim at the bottom, as that would really emphasize my rotund middle. However, on this board I frequently hear posters malign anyone who would wear capris that are loose at the bottom as being oh so dowdy and passe' and matronly etc etc etc. Why can't some women understand that not everyone has the same body to dress and that we all have to do that which is best looking for us, even though it may not be the current trend? Isn't it sad that these posters have to say such ugly things to make someone else feel bad?

I think that this second post of yours contradicts your first post right above it. If you don't appreciate comments on how you dress, then it seems hypocritical to comment on "Walmart" people.
