Re: Drastically reducing my Facebook involvement

[ Edited ]

@smoochy ...........I have been going through my "friends" on FB and deleting many.  I have found several that have not posted in years.  I also delete ones that I have no idea why we are friends.

I am very tired of the political posts too.  I dont believe the BS no matter who they are about.

I will keep FB because of real friends, family and a few local groups I belong to.

Re: Drastically reducing my Facebook involvement

I have a facebook account...I never engage with anyone,  I have the account to sell on Marketplace.

I did follow one event on facebook so that I could remember the date....I did not know at the time I could 'save' it for future reference, nor did I realize it was public when I followed the page.  A friend mentioned the event..and that I followed that page, for some reason it irked me.

Shortly after that she friended me, then 3 other people I know friended me, ugh....I never engage nor do they engage with me, so I am not sure what the point was.  Is it to show you have lots of friends??

I ended up opening a fake account to sell - once the items on my original facebook account under my real name are sold, I will close the account and just use the facebook account to sell.

I joined to keep up with favorite authors and when their new books come out. I don't share any personal information and I scroll right passed political and nasty comments. I'm so glad the mods here poof political content.

I am on Facebook, but the groups I belong to or follow are all sports related, local groups, Jersey shore locations, animal welfare, and holiday themed groups. Every once in awhile someone goes crazy about a local issue (parking, traffic etc), but nothing outrageous or political. I guess am lucky that my groups have good mods and/or people who are respectful.

I agree with you @FlyersGirl . I have 35 "friends" on Facebook and am very selective with the groups I follow (about 6 or 7). It has worked out well for me also.

I do get friend requests but I ignore anyone that I don't know well. I did not join Facebook for a long time. Once in awhile I would check it out. And once I clicked on a site and it messed up my computer at work. That was enough to make me be very cautious.

But I do like that I am able to keep in contact with friends living far away, especially one from my college days that lives in North Carolina. She was affected by the hurricane Helene.

Re: Drastically reducing my Facebook involvement

I don't have those types of problems with Facebook.  I use it a lot for local business information since most places around me use FB now instead of a website or the old Yellow Pages.

It may depend on your friends and what you're clicking on.  I have only one "friend" that reposts anything political and I just ignore that.  I follow a couple of local news stations that have links to news stories that I might read but I have a good idea from the title what it's about and if it would bother or interest me, so I have a choice to view or not.  As for all the infighting and insults in the comment sections, that's all very easy for me to just skip.  I can read a story and not the comments.

Mostly what I see are animal sites (because that's what I tend to view) and ads for products I may have searched on other sites.

Re: Drastically reducing my Facebook involvement

I use FB but am very selective and do not make my account public. I have a select group of friends and that's it.  Having said that, there are some of those 'select' friends, who I've known for a long time, that will post something political.  I will delete the post and not engage.  I have found that compared to the last presidential election cycle, there are far fewer political posts, at least in my FB feed.

Re: Drastically reducing my Facebook involvement

I guess it depends on your approach. I'm on facebook but haven't looked at my feed in a long time nor do I spend a lot of time there. I just go right to the pages I'm interested in which are informative and positive. I recently discovered one that is full of wisdom and great insights and have appreciated what I've read there.

THIS!  Another thing that is very easy to do, is to either click on the three bars (app or mobile view) or the word "feeds" (laptop/computer on the left) and choose friends.  Then you only see the things your friends post.  If you have friends who post things that you don't like to read but you still want to keep them as friends, just go to their profile and select "unfollow."  They have no idea you do this, and you don't see their posts unless you click on their profile.  You can also hide your posts from people by going to your settings.

I've been on Facebook since 2009.  I have no problems with Facebook and am on there a lot.

I don't understand how people say they have Facebook friends they don't know. When you receive a friend request, the response choices are confirm or delete.  Make your choice.

I don't have a gazillion friends on there. I used to be politically outspoken on there, years back.  A few unfriended me and I've unfriended a few. I don't post political stuff now.

Facebook is what you make it. And I absolutely don't use Facebook marketplace.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Drastically reducing my Facebook involvement

I'd be totally lost without facebook.  It's a great way to keep up with family & friends (especially those far away), see pictures and events in their lives, etc.  For the most part, I can control what I see in my newsfeed by "unfollowing" a certain friend's posts.  I do this a lot at election time.
