Re: Dr Oz in front of Congress

Dr. Drew was on last night and I was channel surfing (another one I'm not so sure about) but they were discussing it. His panel had a bunch of women saying we, the public need to be smart enough to do our own research before heading out and buying any of this stuff touted on TV. Yet one woman said she blames Dr. Oz because he, being a healthcare professional, should know better and has the option to refuse to use the words he did and at least not spoken or used the word "miracle".

Dr. Drew explained that he probably was just reading the cue cards because all TV is pretty much scripted. He said just before coming on the air he had been asked to read something he disagreed with and they went away and toned it down but he had to really push for it but the intent of the piece was still there. He more or less said it's what they have to do to keep their shows. The lone woman said, that's exactly what she was talking about - no one can make you do or say anything and Dr. Drew said that he was making no excuses but its bad enough for nighttime TV but daytime is much worse. SO basically he said it comes down to them doing whatever it takes to keep making money. To me, it makes them all nothing more than a snake oil salesman to me.

I deliberately looked for his show yesterday and saw that it was a rerun. What show were you watching that was new? Was it not on the channel and time that it's usually on?

I don't watch any of those Dr shows. They make me worry I have everything they discuss.

Same here nunya.

Only watched him a couple of times on Oprah. I think they loose their creditability when they get their own television programs. Even if they continue their private practice I still do not like the ""Hollywood effect"" that usually takes over in their lives.

Kevin Trudeau probably felt like he had good excuses to for what all he said.

hmm, I just read some of the excerpts of his testimony.

1. It has been stated in this thread he testified before Congress- actually it was a Senate subcommittee. Seems by some of the statements made here about what Congress should be doing, a backhanded way of slamming the mostly "R" Congress.

Anyway, here is the exchange from Senator McCaskill:

I can't figure this out, Dr. Oz. I get that you do a lot of good on your show. I understand that you give a lot of information that's great information about health and you do it in a way that's easily understandable. You're very talented, you're obviously very bright, you've been trained in science-based medicine.

And then bringing up some of the cringe-worthy things he's said about weight loss: products:

Now, here's three statements you made on your show: "You may think magic is make believe, but this little bean has scientists saying they've found the magic weight loss cure for every body type, it's green coffee extract." Quote: "I've got the number one miracle in a bottle to burn your fat. It's raspberry ketone." Quote: "Garcinia cambogia, it may be the simple solution you've been looking for to bust your body fat for good."

She concluded, "I don't get why you need to say this stuff because you know it's not true

So, while saying it's not Dr Oz' fault and people should do their research, she pretty much provided text from his show that he said himself and other than a few diligent people doing their own research, most people would take his word for it since he is a respected doctor and therefore feel no need to do any further research.

Hi pridequeen: Thank you for taking the time to look this up, and posting.

I hope everyone reads this.

My daughter's in-laws know Dr. Oz well. She's mentioned before he became a talk show host he was a well respected cardiothoracic surgeon. I do not know if he still practices medicine.

I know somebody who had a Heart Transplant by his Surgical Team at Columbia this was a good many years ago though.

I think he still is attending surgeon but in reality how often does he actually do the transplant surgery himself would be a good question,

I think he is still a Professor of Surgery and Vice Chairman of Dept of Surgery or something like that she said.
