@Lipstickdiva wrote:Not true. I don't watch the news all day long. I generally turn it on while I'm getting ready for work in the morning. I might watch a little of our local news at 6.
But lately, every single morning the first thing I hear when GMA comes on is about the coronavirus and the death toll from it and the new outbreaks. It's enough to alarm many people. And then half of what they are scrolling across the bottom of the screen is about the coronavirus.
Were you responding to my post? I wasn't singling you out. Are you alarmed?
I turn on the news every morning for an hour before I leave for work. I appreciate being kept up to date on the spread of COVID-19. I am concerned, but not alarmed. And even if I were alarmed I wouldn't be blaming the media, I'd be blaming the virus. It's not like the media is just making $#!& up about it. They are reporting what is happening and speaking with experts in the field. Information is power.
I guess if I didn't want to hear about it I'd turn the news off or watch people selling jewelry (which I HAVE done in the past, btw).

Yes. He also has political aspirations.
If we're so desperate for reassurance and leadership that we turn to some radio show host, we're in trouble.
Edited to add: So is this a political thread? I have no idea what this guy's persuasion is, only having heard him when I was younger giving quite explicit love and nookie advice.
Maybe he could sell us all some Theraworx for Joint Discomfort.
[still giggling over the nookie reference]

Oh, my goodness, @Mmsfoxxie . You made me look. Ugh several times over. For anyone else as brave, google his name Covid 19.
So much for Dr. Drew.
Thumbs way down.

@QueenDanceALot @Mmsfoxxie, well I read the transcript. I am always interested in what people that have no epidemiology or infectious disease experience have to say. Well, he was dead wrong about this "the 1.7% fatality rate is going to fall".
Well, I don't know where he got the 1.7%, early on they were saying 2%. And that was when we had no deaths yet reported in the US, so he can't say it was specifically for the US.
But at any rate, as of today the World Health Organization increased the fatality rate of COVID-19 to 3.4% globally.
Seems we have quite a high fatality rate occurring in Northern Italy & quite a few deaths in Iran. Reason to panic? No. But another reason why people just need to toally avoid these political sources and focus on what the experts are saying.
ETA: and evidently this doc is not an expert in infectious disease so he needs to stick with what he does know maybe? Don't know who he is really.

It is possible for the death rate to go down. This virus is new. We know the vast majority of people who get it have mild symptoms and recover.
The way they figure out what is going on is by keeping meticulous statistics. Statistics are the font of knowledge. China didn't do that. They had a stellar response once they got kicked in the face by corona, but we don't have that valuable tracking information from early on.
Here in the US, we had poor access to testing kits with stringent testing criteria on top of it. We're just starting to get out of the gate with adding to the world's knowledge. We can't trust Iran's statistics. We have a few outbreaks with reliable data. So the death rate could go down or go up, we have to wait until they can reliably flesh out what happens for the whole event.
Let's hope going forward we don't have annual corona death rates similar to or greater than the seasonal flu deaths. But we don't know because we don't have enough information to draw any conclusions.

And it is a Huge Media Event. The Media loves this type of thing, whether we and they want to admit it. Cue scary music, put up picture of Giant Corona Virus and go to intro......
They only love it when they can advance their agenda. It's like covering mass shooters - when the shooter doesn't fit the narrative - crickets.
