Purging is my project for 2015. Not to the extreme of the young man that OP mentioned above, but much more brutal than in my younger years.

One thing I liked about the gifts I received this year is that they are replacements for things I should have already thrown out. As I put the new items away, I tossed out the ratty, old things they replaced.
