I don't send to animal requests because there are people in desperate need.  I feel they should come first.  Just my opinion and let's face it we're not rich.  I give locally too but the good thing is that if they keep mailing me I know the mailman has been.  Sometimes he comes at night and I don't want the mail sitting in the box all night.  I mean, it can get trying because you want to help.  I gave to "where it's needed most."  The Q had The Red Cross on their site if you want to give.  It's hard to trust.  I guess we have to do our homework.

One charity sent me return address labels and they were so old they fell off.  LOL!!!  I just tossed them.  I know how to write so I write my own return address.  I can print them out on the computer but it's easier for me to just write it.

There are lots of options for people in need. They can make phone calls, animals can't, they can report if they are being abused, animals can't.  Animals are totally dependent on people for kindness and help. I donate only to animal charities.

Re: Donating To Charity

What about charities for minors and young children,  who are similarly totally dependent and have no independent voice, no power, no agency.......reliant completely upon "adults".

Not in other countries.

It astounds me that anyone would put animals over people. I also can't fathom only donating locally as some on this thread have said they do. Doing so is basically only giving to the rich (because of all the resources in the US, the poor here would be considered well off elsewhere).

Children can speak, tell teachers, neighbors, dial 911.

A person who kills their dog, buries it and claim they gave it away isn't investigated by police, but a child who disappears is, not only investigated, but is covered on the evening news.

The public accepts the mistreatment of pigs and chickens in exchange for lower prices. They just don't care.

Thanks for recommending the Charity Navigator.........I just looked up WWF and it's rated 99%  4 stars  (I believe the 4 stars are the highest.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

I can't throw away solicitation gifts, b/c most are beautiful.

I receive solicitation from an Indian school with gifts made by the children. They make those beautiful Dream Catchers with their little hands. Something always made by the children.

They're not one of my charities and I wish I had enough to give to them also, but when I receive them I just can't take another on. I wish I could and maybe one day.

I wonder if I supported them one day and have forgotten.

@febe1

My father always donated to an Indian children's school.

Animal or people. Let someone give where their heart directs them. Don’t make it some sort of competition.
