Don't Pay For Your Covid-19 Test

So I had cataract surgery on June 17. I went to CityMD to get a Covid-19 nasal swab test. I went in network, was assured by both the urgent care center and my health insurance plan ( I pay for it from New York state Marketplace) there would be no cost to me. My governor has also stated anyone can be tested for free. I got this from a website "Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) ACT says commercial health insurance plans must cover Covid-19 testing without imposing any cost sharing on enrollees." So to my surprise I get an EOB saying I owe $ 70. I called and was told I owe a $70 copay. I was livid, the customer service rep said she would flag it to be looked at. They sent me an email yesterday, this was an error, they are rectifying it, I owe nothing. So do not let your health insurance try to get payment from you for a Covid-19 test.

@Jordan2 : Kudos to you for fighting the charge. I hate to think that some insurance companies would deliberately bill for this, thinking that they could get away with it. In many instances they probably do!

@MmsfoxxieI have a high tolerance for pain. It was uncomfortable but it is over quickly. I have a deviated septum in my right nostril, I should have mentioned it, he tried the right side then had to go left! I joked with the doctor if the swab would come out my ear, he said just about!

The nasal swab isn’t painful and over quickly. In our state you can get a sputum test which just involves spitting into a cup. If you go to your States website, you should be able to find testing sites. All COVID-19 tests including antibodies are free. Quest has a $10 charge for physician oversight if you self order. The fee is not reimbursable. Many urgent care centers do Covid 19 and antibody testing free. That’s how it goes in NJ
