My husband is always buying ****** from the Dollar Store (mostly candy).  He's absolutely incensed now and knows exactly who to blame and I concur.  Cat MadCat MadCat Mad

[ Edited ]

I know this thread is about the Dollar Tree chain, but I wanted to mention how the 99 Cents Stores handle this.

About 4 years ago, the 99 Cents stores started offering products that were $1.49 and $1.99.   I was shocked, but those higher priced items were still actually very good prices ... and broadened the range of things you could purchase there.   In addition, anything above a dollar has a very large price sticker prominently displayed on each package, so there's no confusion or surprises at checkout.

While better than 95% of their merchandise is still a buck, the most expensive thing I've ever seen sold was for $7.99 and it was for an item I'd seen at Target for $32.99!

While I am sure that Dollar Tree is doing what is fiscally advantageous for long term survival, often retailers make changes based on what their competitors start doing.   That's just good business sense, and in this case, a win-win for everyone.

Re: Dollar Tree breaks the $1 barrier as costs take a bite

The Dollar Tree was a good place to pick up quite a few toys for shelters.  The Angel trees are always very specific for Christmas but shelters can always use toys, crayons, etc. all year.

Many folks depend upon DT, especially when income is limited.  We may not think some extra few pennies do not matter but to some, they do.

Re: Dollar Tree breaks the $1 barrier as costs take a bite

I read the article on another site that had more info.

Dollar Tree said they're not raising their prices on items in their stores that they now crry.

What they are doing is adding items to their inventory in an area in the store called Dollar Tree Plus that will carry items that cost more than a dollar.  They are doing this to expand their inventory to add items that they do not carry now.

It is a good idea and welcomed by me.

Some of the items that they sell for $1 are selling for $ .89 elsewhere, but if people Are already in the store, they won't shop elsewhere to save 11 cents.  They lose money on some items and make money on other items.  It evens out.
