One day I did take my dog into the grocery store. He was very ill and I had just left the vet. One of his meds was not readily available at my vets office, but my vet called and my local large chain grocery store had it. My dog is about 6 pounds and I walked into the store with him on my shoulder wrapped in a blanket. I stopped at the first check out station and told the person I was going directly to the pharmacy with the dog. SHe said I could. I would never do this in a regular situation, but I couldnt leave him at home alone and I needed that med. ASAP, so I did it that one time. He is a poodle and doesnt shed at all. I dont think one person noticed and he didnt make a scene in the least. But I hope to never need to do that again.

This thread sounds familiar.

It is familiar because this topic has become an annual event for the OP. From all indications, her grocery store is over-run with dogs and becoming worse every year. ![]()
I live in a dog friendly town and haven't seen a dog in the grocery store outside of maybe a tiny one in a purse. Some non-food businesses have dogs and cats in the stores and I like that. All of the outdoor dining areas are dog friendly and I love that.
There are far dirtier things in life than an occasional dog in a public place.

@MickD wrote:In my little beach town service dogs wear the identifying service dog vests and I have seen the handlers wear their identification on a cord.....simple.
Exactly @MickD genuine Service Dogs have full vests clearly stating their purpose and that they are not there to pet as they are working.
I was rather angry with a woman that had an adorable snoozing dachshund in the basket of her grocery cart. When I did ask why he was there she said he was a "therapy dog" because she has anxiety. That must have been one fabulous therapy dog as she seemed to be completely relaxed to me.
Sorry if this sounds flippant but situations where folks bring in their pets as "service dogs" sets back the cause of actual working service dogs.

I prefer animals to humans anyway. It's too bad the dogs can't shop for the humans. At least they wouldn't be on the cell phones blocking aisles and being obnoxious.

I wonder how you all would feel about this if you were allergic to dogs and could not go to the store to get your groceries without having an asthma attack???

@QueenDanceALot wrote:So, do people who think dogs should be banned from grocery stores have dogs in their homes?
Or are they banned there too?
I have a dog. I've had up to 3 dogs. My dog now is a rescue and my last 4 have been rescues. I also used to volunteer with a local rescue group.
I feed the birds and squirrels in my backyard and have protectively been watching some baby bunnies. I also have 3 snakes that I refuse to kill although I'd like to relocate them.
And I have also freed a skunk from my neighbor's yard that he trapped. I had to do that in the middle of the night so he didn't see me.
So it's not that I don't love animals. I have no children by choice so my dogs are like my kids. But unless they are a service dog of some sort, I don't think dogs belong in a grocery store.

This thread isn't about service dogs. It's about people who bring their pets into the stores.
I'd rather they bring them into the store than leave the pet in the car

You have said that so many times about several issues for you.
How would YOU feel if you were a disabled vet and someone wouldn't let you in because you needed a service dog for medical reasons?
I have asthma, what I would do is carry my emergency inhaler with me, which is what should be done all the time anyway.

I love dogs but, honestly, taking a dog with you every where you go is not normal, appropriate behavior.

As long as the dog is well behaved,i have no problem with it.
