What is the difference between a service dog and a comfort dog? Does the law pertain to service dogs, or to both service and comfort dogs?
There has to be a line drawn between the two. My girlfriend got stuck sitting next to a big dog on a plane that was a comfort animal. It growled and bared its teeth to her. She begged to have her seat changed, and they did, finally. What a horrible thing to happen to her!
I'd just hate to be put in that position, especially with cats, as I am HIGHLY allergic to them.

There is not a grocery store or restaurant anywhere that does not contain mice, most have rats as well. Of course efforts are made to eradicate them but nothing will eliminate them. Both mice and rats are excellent climbers so, unlike dogs who are confined to carts or the floor, there is no place they haven't visited, the shelves, counters, tables...

@bri20 wrote:This thread isn't about service dogs. It's about people who bring their pets into the stores.
I'd rather they bring them into the store than leave the pet in the car
In the summer....or anywhere Year round when it is over 70 degrees....people need to leave their dogs home. Dogs do not belong in a car on warm days PERIOD! No excuses.

If someone is bringing their *pet* into a store, restaurant, etc...*just because* they can get away with it, they are ignorant.
I can't believe how many are comparing children to pets, either.
Then again, yes I can.

I looked for you, a comfort dog is not a service dog, although some dogs are trained to be both (not common, apparently).
Comfort dogs are those that go to hospitals for patients who want to pet one for awhile, or those who provide comfort for rape victims at a trial, etc.
Service dogs typically are trained to open drawers, turn off light switches, calm a vet having flashbacks, help a disabled person walk, things like that.
The ADA laws only apply to service dogs.

In Paris and France in general dogs are allowed in stores, restaurants, cafe, bars and everybody is cool about it. They treat them like kids. The waiters bring them water, people give them something, pet them. Very friendly society.
So I see no harm in bringing the dog to the store as long as the dog is not crazy.

The biggest issue, that the Federal govt has chosen NOT to address, is that there are no official Federal certifications or licenses for service animals, and even if there were, business owners are *not permitted* per ADA regulations, to even ASK whether any animal is a service animal or not.
Anyone can buy service dog/animal collars, jackets or banners, or could have one made up or sew it themselves, and put it on any animal they choose. Anyone can also take their pet dog, cat, pig, iguana, monkey, gerbil, goldfish or whatever anywhere they like and management is not allowed to ask them to prove it's a service animal. That's a no-no.
The ADA clearly states that no companion or emotional support animal has the legal Federal "rights" of a service animal, yet the Federal govt also provides the means for this to be completely flaunted all the time by refusing to require any type of registration.
The only recourse a business owner has is to refuse service and ask them to leave. If it's a service animal they will be cited. If it isn't I think it's up to the state, sometimes. It's a call-their-bluff thing.

@QueenDanceALot wrote:So, do people who think dogs should be banned from grocery stores have dogs in their homes?
Or are they banned there too?
That is different. A grocery store is not your home, nor a bank nor any other public place. We had lots of dogs, but they were dogs. They had no business at the grocery store. I doubt seriously they would want to be there either. . . People could step on them, drop cans on them, run over them with carts, and they could bite or frighten people too.
