There's also a new allergy medicine (non steroid) out that you can get from your vet - Apoquel. My vet said they've had a lot of good results with it. Unfortunately, my dog had a bad reaction to it, so he's back on Benedryl.
When my dog had grass allergies, my vet said to give him a 25 mg tab of Benedryl daily. When they start licking the paws, then they get yeast infections. It's a vicious cycle.

thanks. I give her Benadryl twice a day. I tried her on Zyrtec hoping that would be better, but it didn't seem to help as much. The vet mentioned putting her on Prednisone, but I really REALLY don't want to go there unless I've tried everything else and there is no other choice. My girl isn't even two yet, and I hate the idea of long-term steroid useage!

I still haven't found booties that work, but haven't made it to walmart yet to get the baby socks to try those. I'm really crossing my fingers.

It is a constant battle for sure! Trying to keep her feet dry after all her feet baths is also an issue.

Benedryl dosing for dogs is 1 mg per pound.

Just FYI.

My poodle had terrible grass allergies especially when we moved South. What helped was picking her up and washing her paws in the sink with Aveeno baby soap every time she came back in. It helped get rid of most of the allergen and her itching and discomfort wasn't so severe anymore.

Thanks for the aveeno baby soap suggestion. I already wash her feet every time using a betadin/water solution. But I'd like to alternate that with something less harsh. I think a medicated soak once a day would probably be enough.

I just got back from Petco. I settled on the little rubber pawz booties for now until I come up with something better. They look kind of silly (like little red duck flippers), but hopefully they will work.

My dog had those. Although she liked to kick them off so I just gave up and washed her feet like an apostle, the little princess. I'm going back a ways (about ten years) but Aveeno was the best thing out at that time so I used that. They may have something better nowadays. I can tell you she did outgrow her allergies after about a year or two so here's hoping your doggy does the same. Smile

LOL, funny you phrased it like that...about washing her feet. I've been thinking the same darn thing lately and I've been TELLING her all about it, too when she acts all ornery about me washing her feeties over and over again. I tell her that she doesn't know how much it means when her master bows down and washes her feet! That it is something awfully special, and she should appreciate it more. Somehow she doesn't believe me, hehehe.

She wore her booties on a first walk a while ago. After the first funny minute, she actually seemed to like wearing them and kind of pranced around happily. One of the back ones fell off before we got home, though. Her back paws are smaller than the front, so she might need two different sizes of them. That will look really silly since the sizes are in different colors.

You need to live here where I live. No grass. All of my yard is xeriscaped with gravel. I have a large lot and not one blade of grass.
