All of my GSD are house dogs and lap dogs. Each one has had their spot with a bed/blanket etc. in the main rooms of the house but they always end up sleeping on our bed. I don't allow them on the furniture in the living room but they are allowed on the family room overstuffed sofa and our bed. They always have extra blankets and toys in each of the rooms. These GSD puppies are going to be our biggest because at 10 months they are both in the 90 lb range. I'm just hoping their is enough room in bed for all four of us. ha ha ha!!! It's been my experience that our dog/s have always liked to be in the same room as we are and close to us. I was hoping to get these puppies to sleep on dog beds but frankly there isn't any room for that in the bedroom. I still might try to put them across the hall in the other bedroom where I had them when they were little. I'll have to see how their personalities develop as they get thru the puppy stages.

Wow! We LOVE GSDs and have had several. I chuckle at their sizes and your sleeping arrangments: we are currently retraining our 40-lb terrier mix rescue dog and 90-lb black Lab to sleep in THEIR beds in the living room. There just is not enough comfortable room for all four of us and both my back was killing me and not getting enough sleep; however, they are so sweet on the bed---woke up one morning after my husband left for work to see a big black Lab face staring at me from my husband's pillow! HAHAHAhahaha! So far, they have been sleeping in their beds in the living room until my husband gets up and then he lets them in on our bed with me. One would think this arrangement would be better and it has been, except they sleep like we are all magnets--right up close to me and I fear moving for any reason or I lose more of my space...they just keep scrooching in closer and closer. Sometimes it feels so good to have them next to me--very soothing and safe. Yet.....when I can't go to the bathroom in the middle of the night for fear my space in the bed will be totally eliminated! Thanks for sharing!

Re: Dog Lovers: Breed Discussion

I've so enjoyed reading about everyone's dogs! The stories about the Collies reminded me of my sister and BIL, who had two Collies years ago. One night something electrical happened to their water heater and started a fire. The house was filling with smoke, and one of the Collies woke them up - they and their three children were safe because of that sweet dog!

I had a little miniature white poodle for 14 years - she was with me when my son was born, and when I left my husband, and when I moved away from everything I had known since I was 12 and started over with a 3-year old and my furry baby. She was such a blessing, and when we had to let her go, I didn't think I could live without her. {#emotions_dlg.unsure} But I've felt the same about all my fur babies who are no longer with me.

But a year and a half later, we lucked out with a lady who had a pregnant one (her name was the same as the one I lost), and her mate looked exactly like my baby. It was just meant to be, and we got a puppy that grew up to look exactly like my first - only much smaller. She was with me for 18 years, and I used to say she was like a growth on my side, because everywhere I was, she was right against me. Poodles are so smart, I always thought if one of them sat up and spoke to me in English one day, I wouldn't have been surprised. {#emotions_dlg.tt1}

I'm a cat lady now, because I couldn't give another dog the attention it needs at this point in my life, and I adore my cats! But I still miss my little poodle babies! {#emotions_dlg.wub}

Re: Dog Lovers: Breed Discussion

As you can guess from my nick name, I love Dobermans. I used to think they were like the snarling vicious beasts they show in movies. To my surprise, they are sweet and loving. Growing up, my folks had Cocker Spaniels so I was used to small dogs, had no experience with large dogs. So I had to get used to something much larger, although my current dobie is small, only weighed 28 pounds when rescued (I will only have rescues) and now is about 42 pounds. She is gorgeous, sleek and trim and a lap dog. Literally. She is on my lap as I type this.

I so understand the change from Cockers to larger dogs! I love your nickname and your dog sounds beautiful!

Re: Dog Lovers: Breed Discussion

I have an 8 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She's a tri-color and easily the most beautiful dog I've ever seen (not that I am biased or anything!) Seriously though, when I am out walking her, people in cars literally pull over to roll down their windows and ask what kind of dog she is and comment on her beauty. Aside from being pretty, however, she is the sweetest dog ever. I am definitely a big fan of this breed! Complete cuddle bugs and lapdogs, but plenty of energy to play and take nice long walks. She is on the small side, which for me is a plus… I like a dog small enough to pick up when necessary. She is a total darling. Unfortunately, I don't know how to insert photos here or I would be happy to share a picture of her. She is my heart!

Annabelle-Grace, your post made me smile. I agree with you that Cavaliers are beautiful and wonderfully sweet dogs. I always called mine cuddle bugs, too. I posted above that I've had five over the years. I've had two tri-colors, two blenheims and a black and tan. They're sweet to everyone they meet, too, which is really nice. Right now I have a Japanese Chin.

Re: Dog Lovers: Breed Discussion

We have an 8 month old cairn terrier. Alfie is a beautiful grey brindle color and has changed colors often since we got him. He is still very much puppy and gets into mischief quite often. He is very smart (aren't all dogs?) and learns something new everyday. He and his pal, Anika, love to be together and he has helped her get more exercise in the last five months. He will be trained as a certified therapy dog but we must wait until he's one year old to officially join the program.

Our "senior" dog, Anika, is a beautiful keeshond and she is our "baby girl." She is such a gentle dog and is so tolerant of Alfie's puppy behavior. Anika is almost ten years old (has a birthday on February 1). Anika is our third keeshond in the last 36 years. She is doing a great job in teaching Alfie manners. Anika is our watch dog and barks every time the door bell rings. She is a retired therapy dog who loves everyone she meets.
