Does anyone store food?

Lately I have seen food stores (eggs, wheat) and complete meals for sale everywhere. At Costco they have a large supply and I see people buying it. Other than the December 21, 2012 why are people doing this. I have heard people say lots of other scenarios. I just wondered if anyone here thought that. I do think it is wise to have supplies in case of bad weather etc.
