We have wooden blinds and shutters now, haven't had any shades in decades.

Gato: The only thing I would change would be to add lots and lots of plants including some indoor trees. The color scheme is lovely.

Re: Does anyone still use shades in their home?

We have huge windows all throughout our house similar to the ones above but we also have plantation shutters on many of them so we can control the sunlight if we need to. Sometimes it can get so bright you can't see a computer screen or tv so we need them.

Wood blinds for us. Not a curtain or drape in the house.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Gee, I haven't used them in ages, but, as I recall, they are very nice, and worked well. Just might use them in my kitchen. Sometimes 'way too much' sunshine/light in a certain window. Just might try the Roman light- filtering type, as in the above photo!

Re: Does anyone still use shades in their home?

The only room where we have shades is in our bedroom. They are room darkening shades, and we NEED them in the winter when the leaves are off of the trees, because our windows face east. When the shades aren't in use, I roll them up and they are hidden behind the valance.

In our living room, we have Pella doors that have the fabric shades between the glass. In our hearth room, we have Pella doors with the mini-blinds built-in, and plantation shutters on the windows on each side of our fireplace.

On our front windows, we have wooden Levolor wide-slat blinds.

I've been thinking of replacing verticals with a roman shade on a 90 inch window in the living room. I've just got to find someone reliable to measure, buy and have installation done. I've been thinking about Costco. Has anyone used them?

Re: Does anyone still use shades in their home?

I have a shade in my computer room. Put it in when we moved into this home as I knew this was going to be our computer room and it is on the South side of our home. Lots of sun and drapes do little to nothing to block the sun, and besides I made our drapes out of a shower curtain left behind by the previous owner.

Took it out as soon as we move in and had shower doors installed. Can't stand a curtain in a shower, I'm a door man, something like that.
