Judging from what's going on now, I don't think folks will be actually talking 400-500 years from now. I think most (or some) folks will evolve into not being able to use their speech/vocal cords. Everything will be done by electronics. Now that I think about it, just maybe we (well, they) will 'think' a sentence and their electronic voice gadget will speak that sentence for them. No need to use their mouths to communicate. Well, it is possible................

PoodlePet2: I don't think that the folks thousands of years from now will even try to look up our speech patterns, etc. Our present videos/audios/whatevers will be obsolete, and I can't imagine people transferring all of our millions of photos and videos into their futuristic gadgets. Plus, they might be too busy to even care, unless they are historians, and even so............ Well, all we can hope for is for them to have the desire to slow down. Be more observant of their surroundings. Still, it's a bit scary just thinking about it all............

A few years ago, I lost some of my hearing (age related). So - I have a very hard time understanding them speak on tv - but I assumed it was me. I noticed they talk too fast and sometimes they're over-excited -- almost shouting. It's very annoying. Just watch some of the tv shows from the past --- they spoke slow to normal.

i'm from the east coast and husband from calif. i'm a fast talker and he's slow. i'm used to him now, but i used to be thinking to myself, just get to the point or can you speed things up here?

i'm now living in calif and notice the natives do seem to talk slower, but just like everywhere, some don't enunciate very well. i do because when i was a child my dad was always correcting me. deese and dose! lol

Yes, I have definitely noticed a faster pace of speech everywhere.

Additionally, I've noticed a sort of slurring together of words.

I think it's just a result of the quicker pace of life.

Watch a movie from 20 or 30 years ago.

It's amazing how much slower the pace was, even in the movies.

@on the bay, the 1st thing I thought of when I saw your thread was a trend of speech pattern that I've noticed for the past few years.

It's a sing-song uptalk/upspeak & it drives me crazy!

It's worse than the teenaged valley-girl talk of the 70s & 80s, because even adult women use it...apparently trying to seem cool or even pretentious.

There was a spin-off to Project Runway awhile back: 'Fashion Start Up', & I quit watching for 2 reasons: #1. It was lousy. & #2. The way Katia Beauchamp spoke made me nuts!

Again-if anyone wants to know what I'm talking about-listen to Mary DiAngelo(sp?) on IN the Kitchen With Mary. But it's not just her, many women announcers seem to be picking this up.

Its not the speed at all-sometimes its slower than usual.

I'll have to see if I can listen to Katia Beauchamp. I forgot to watch that show.

Yes, I've noticed as well.... add all this together with the awful mispronunciation of far too many words and TPTB are missing an opportunity to teach their on-air talent how to speak correctly when in front of an audience and how not to slip into sloppy speech habits or that grating sing-song speech.......

All it takes is a semester's worth of classes....

@on the bay, it made me so crazy that I even looked it up! There are lots of articles on how that speech pattern has emerged...so we're not the only ones who've noticed.

In addition to 'upspeak' they also mention something called "vocal fry" - it's the way some girls insert an almost growling undertone when they speak.

Just a few, not that you have to read 'em!
