Does anyone have a generator?

If you have a generator can you tell me what size/kind is best and puts out power the longest (for how long?) for a home. I see portable ones but I assume they dont last more than 4 or so hours yes? We want to get one sometime this year. (of course not now they are sold out from the hurricane). We didnt lose power this time (but all our friends and famly did) so we are seriously thinking about one for winter time. I would appreciate any info (we know nothing about them at all..lol).
