Last year I looked out my window and saw a HUGE bird at my suet feeder and he had a red spot on his head and when I looked him up I saw that he was a red-bellied woodpecker (strange how he's named that when his belly isn't red, but the top of his head!).
Anyway, I almost fell over because he just dwarfed the other birds and the suet feeder!
@QueenDanceALot I know exactly what you mean, but I think they must have named the red-headed woodpecker first...if you look up that one's picture, it makes total sense! I think the male red-bellies have rusty shading on their stomachs. And the pileated woodpecker is about 2x the size of the red-bellied. They’re really giant!

The one in my yard was the bird shown on the bottom row, first birdie.
@golding76- The one on the bottom row is the Nuttall's Woodpecker and is only seen in California. What's the actual name of the one you saw in your yard?
It would be odd for a Nuttall's Woodpecker to be so far from home, unless a hurricane blew it there. ![]()
(ETA: A couple of times, when I've gone into the Audubon link, it's changed the photos shown. Not sure why that's happening.)

Venezia,
It was the Pilieated Woodpecker that I was pointing out on the Audubon site. Things must have been switched around on my screen.

If I ever see one of the pileated woodpeckers at my feeders I probably WILL fall over. I am within city limits and have never heard of anyone seeing one of those in my neighborhood but I have seen a few really big hawks in my backyard and they always startle me!
And, yes, I think I noticed a rusty colored belly on the red-bellied guys.

I live in the Southeast Valley of Arizona. The name of the woodpeckers here are DESTRUCTIVE!
They have systematically wrecked and pecked holes in the decorative trim on our home as well as numerous neighbors' homes. At first DH filled them with brillow pads..that didn't work. We hung tinsel and CD's which drove them away but DH who is 72 and a foot amputee and our neighbor went up on a ladder to fill the holes and repaint.
It seems as the construction of houses were complete, they moved along to their next meals.
As a side note, the following year we had a pigeon infestation. I joked with DH that our house must have been built on an Native American burial ground.

It could be one of three. Your description is not detailed. Besides the pleated there is the red headed woodpecker or the male red bellied.
