I'm not 100% sure what you mean by a take-out restaurant, but I am 100% sure that if I am picking up my food I am not tipping.

I worked as a food server while my husband was finishing up his degree. It could be time-consuming to get a to-go order ready and in the meantime my customers were not getting my attention. There are other situations where tipping is overboard but not in this situation.

Thought tipping a compensation for not wait staff not making minimum wage, yes?

tansy: Good reminder...but if the host/cashier is ringing up an order, how can one be sure the $ are allotted to the server preparing an order (whom is not visible in the takeout area)?

The only take out food we get is Chinese that we pick up, and no we dont tip when we pick up our Chinese food. (There is NO delivery here of any sort where we live in the country).. We go out to eat twice a week (usually) so of course we tip to eat in. When I lived in the city, of course we tipped the delivery person but I didnt tip when I picked up.

I tip in a restaurant, and for delivery to my house, but no when I drive to go pick up my food after a call in.

I haven't done takeout in years. Only time I "takeout" is what's left of an Eat-in meal. And that tip goes to the person that served me.

Truth be told? Can't even remember how long it has been since my last "Eat-out" meal.
