Do you or your kids play the xylophone?

With my hand problems, I can't play any of the musical instruments I once played. (Flute, piccolo, autoharp, recorder, etc) I miss it.

I am thinking about the xylophone. I could pad the mallets to make them easy for me to grip. What I don't know is if padding the mallets would mean I could not stike the keys hard enough to generate sound.

Do nyou or a family member ever play one? Would padding kill the sound?
