Do you feel threatened or in danger when you're with this person? Do you feel as if this person could suddenly go into a rage?

Yes. I have known quite a few. As you know there are different types of bipolar and not everyone cycles the same. I have only known one woman Who made me nervous when she was in a manic phase but it was never without warning. I knew when to keep my distance it was because she was not properly medicated. Some with bipolar have less intense cycles and some suffer depression more than mania.

Our previous next door neighbors daughter is bi-polar and schizophrenic. I am not that familiar with which diagnosis manifests her anger and rage. I know that her mother has been afraid of her at times as she could be very threatening in her behavior. The girl has been in many facilities over the years but was dismissed from the last one because she refuses to take her medications. It is a heartbreaking situation for the entire family.

I think everyone has probably known someone who is bipolar. It is not rare. Not everyone has the same symptoms or problems, any more than they do in having heart disease or cancer or a broken bone, I have not felt threatened by the two bipolar people I have known. But they stay in touch with their doctors and take their medications. Both are very high functioning and successful people.

I used to know someone who was bi-polar. Back then, they called his illness manic depression. Whenever we were with him, he was OK because he was taking his meds, but we did hear stories of outrageous behavior when he suddenly decided he didn't need them. There was really some pretty bizarre stuff, but it was more in the things he said and certain actions, but he was never violent. Unfortunately, he took his own life during a period when he was off his meds. He was only 27.
