Re: Do you know any rugged individualists?

i read the definitions posted here and was surprised.  my idea of a rugged individualist is or was a man who was very outdoorsy meaning the rugged type who lived by his own rules. he had no interest in the outside world.

i guess i learned something new today.

"American pioneer" and "American frontier"  are two things that come to mind when I think about rugged individualism and those things no longer exist. It's just American history now.

@ladyroxanne, I would say that the "had no interest in the outside world" might actually fit in the sense that such an individual believes so strongly that he or she can get along without any help.

Re: Do you know any rugged individualists?

@cherry

Not sure what constitutes a "rugged individualist". During my 33 years of being an hourly worker, at a very big company? Here is what I told all of my co-workers. I want to be at the very bottom of the "pecking order (not wages)", or "the Top Person".

I wanted and followed those guidelines through my whole working career. No way was I going to be anywhere "in the middle", getting hit from superiors and subordinates. Not worth it to me, regardless of title or wages. Top or bottom for me.

Now my Adult Hockey League? The buck stopped with me. I was called a Monarch/Dictator, and other unmentionable names. I made all the rules/decisions, and I took all the blames. That is the way I wanted it and kept it for the 52 years that my league was in existence.

"Rugged Individualist"? You tell me.

Re: Do you know any rugged individualists?

There's some great ones in the book I'm reading. They're the ones who fight off bears, bad weather, being lost in the woods, no knife, no matches, no hatchet, not dressed warm enough and no compass. Real rugged guys.
