Do you follow ALL your vets suggestions and instructions?

Just curious. Years ago my love Mandy started having seizures, the vet suggested we take her to Michigan State University to do brain surgery at a cost of about 5K, it really wasn't even an option for us to even consider that. The other option was for medication but the vet said that prolonged use of the meds would probably effect her kidneys after time and they would shut down.

I went home, went online did research and spoke with breeders, and a few vets. We decided to NOT give her the medication after doing alot of research and changed her diet which seemed to help. She lived to be 14 which is a pretty ripe old age (she was about 75 lbs) and when the time came to put her down the vet told me that I had made the right decision on not putting her on the meds, her kidneys would have shut down years before....

Last night I had a empty garbage bag in my mail box with a note from a gal who said that her dog was having seizures and had to have brain surgery and so she was requesting people donate bottles to her cause..my heart went out to her but at the same time I am thinking "Is this surgery really necessary" - I feel like there are some vets out there that know that some will do whatever they have it, whether it be go into serious debt, beg, borrow or steal to treat their animals and I am not so sure some of these suggested surgeries and treatments are always the best thing for the animal of the owner.
