Do you belong to a Senior Center in your area?

[ Edited ]

If you do, how do you like it, and how involved are you in it?

Re: Do you belong to a Senior Center in your area?

I belong to the senior center close to our house.

I've taken a few classes there- Zumba, Gentle Yoga, an iphone class and I think that's it.  I had to stop the zumba and yoga because I tore the meniscus in my right knee and haven't had surgery on it yet.

I walk at the senior center in the mornings, Monday-Friday.

Our senior center is really heavy on card games- bridge, canasta, etc.  I wish they'd offer more choices.

I'm 62 and am probably one of the youngest people there.  In my area, you can start going to the senior centers at age 55.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

I've noticed that's about all they do at ours the few times I was there for a flu shot. They're also big on chair exercises.

It's not for me.

@I am still oxox, if you are addressing me, I am not assuming everyone here is a senior citizen.  I say, IF THIS APPLIES TO YOU. "If you do", if it doesn't no need to comment.

I take exercise classes at my senior center 4 days a week.  They are open to everyone over the age of 55 and the classes are free.  But you have to provide an authorization form from your doctor first.  (No biggie.). The center offers a variety of other classes....art, bridge, games, movies, computer classes, (the list goes on and on).  I could probably spend several hours a day there, if I chose to.  You can also get lunch there for a minimal cost.  And they have periodic parties with entertainment.  It's a great center.

The Senior Centers around where I live are just a place where old thinking people gather to complain and gossip!  The exercises are just a tiny bit of extra movement which may be good for someone who has never worked out.  The food served is just really small portions that wouldn't even be considered a snack.  I went to bingo once with friends and we were shushed for talking even though the numbers called were projected on a screen in front and there was a lot of time between calls.  Just not for me at all and don't think it ever will be.

Not my cup of tea.  I am too active for the senior centers in my neck of the woods.  I would feel out of place.  99.9 % of the people there are using walkers and/or are carrying around oxygen tanks on their walkers.

Sometimes, I will go on their monthly casino trips. whistling.gifThat's it.

What tickles me is that at 5'7 120 lbs soaking wet w/high metabolism, I am always asked to join their chair exerciser's group.  I'm like, do I look like I need to exercise?  I need calories.  Where's the "real" food around here?????

We have our small book club at senior center once a month.  Lunch is only 4.00, unlimited coffee .50.  Cook is professionally trained and turns out excellent meals when they give her good ingredients.  (or something horrendous when they don't)  Very few other activities are scheduled there, we are in the boondocks.  We did have a program on computer scams last month.
